Although the major influence of black carbon (BC) on soil and sediment organic contaminant sorption is widely accepted, an understanding of the mechanisms and natural variation in pyrogenic carbon interaction with natural organic matter (NOM) is lacking. The sorption of a phenolic NOM monomer (catechol) and humic acids (HA) onto BC was examined using biochars made from oak, pine, and grass at 2...

Benzeneboronate of catecholic carboxyl methyl esters, N-acetyldopamine, coumarin and catechol estrogens were prepared as crystalline derivatives in high yield. Related catechol compounds with extra polar functional group(s) (OH, NH2) do not form or only partially form unstable cyclic boronate derivatives.

The aminolysis of a mildly activated aminoacid ester, benzyloxycarbonyl-L-phenylalanine cyanomethyl ester, by glycine esters in the presence of catechol has been studied as a model of catalysis by RNA cis-vicinal-diol systems in protein biosynthesis. Catechol accelerated the aminolysis, especially in the presence of bases, probably by nucleophilic catalysis.

Estrogen 2and 4-hydroxylase (ESH), a microsomal enzyme which mediates the formation of catechol estrogens, has been studied in the kidneys of castrated male Syrian hamsters, a species uniquely susceptible to induction of renal carcinomas by both steroidal and stilbene estrogens. The apparent K„, for estrone was 17.0 MM,and V,™«, was 0.5 pmol per mg protein per min for ESH in renal microsom...

Oxygen sensitivity mutations of Cryptococcus neoformans were mapped to three genetic loci. Three oxygen-sensitive mutants had mutations that appeared allelic and exhibited albinism tightly linked to oxygen sensitivity; these three and a fourth exhibited defects in catechol uptake and catechol oxidation to melanin. Catecholamine metabolism appears to protect C. neoformans from oxidants.

Nearly 1% of all clinically used drugs are catecholics, a family of catechol-containing compounds. Using label-free dynamic mass redistribution and Tango β-arrestin translocation assays, we show that several catecholics, including benserazide, catechol, 3-methoxycatechol, pyrogallol, (+)-taxifolin and fenoldopam, display agonistic activity against GPR35.

In order to study the influence of molecular structure on the formation of a monolayer, two molecules have been considered, namely N-stearoyldopamine (DOPA) and 4-stearyl-catechol (ST). The difference between these two molecules is the amide group in DOPA. By investigating these monolayers at different surface areas per molecule, the molecular configurations of a DOPA/ST monolayer on the Au(111...

Phenol- and naphthalene-degrading indigenous Pseudomonas pseudoalcaligenes strain C70 has great potential for the bioremediation of polluted areas. It harbours two chromosomally located catechol meta pathways, one of which is structurally and phylogenetically very similar to the Pseudomonas sp. CF600 dmp operon and the other to the P. stutzeri AN10 nah lower operon. The key enzymes of the catec...

The development of materials based on renewable resources with enhanced mechanical and physicochemical properties is hampered by the abundance of hydrophilic groups because of their structural instability. Bio-inspired from the strong adhesion ability of mussel proteins, renewable and robust soy-based composite films were fabricated from two soybean-derived industrial materials: soluble soybean...
