The double branched cover is a construction which provides a link between problems in knot theory and other questions in low-dimensional topology. Given a knot in a 3-manifold, the double branched cover gives a natural way of associating a 3-manifold to the knot. Similarly, the double branched cover of a properly embedded surface in a 4-manifold is a 4-manifold whose boundary is the double bran...
We study Galois covers of the projective line branched at three points with bad reduction to characteristic p, under the condition that p strictly divides the order of the Galois group. As an application of our results, we prove that the field of moduli of such a cover is at most tamely ramified at p.
In this paper, we demonstrate that the complete, hyperbolic representation of various two-bridge knot and link groups enjoy a certain local rigidity property inside of the PGL4(R) character variety. We also prove a complementary result showing that under certain rigidity hypotheses, branched covers of amphicheiral knots admit non-trivial deformations near the complete, hyperbolic representation.
We generalise theorems of Cochran-Lickorish and Owens-Strle to the case of links with more than one component. This enables the use of linking forms on double branched covers, Heegaard Floer correction terms, and Donaldson’s diagonalisation theorem to complete the table of unlinking numbers for nonsplit prime links with crossing number nine or less.
We present a topological interpretation of knot and braid contact homology in degree zero, in terms of cords and skein relations. This interpretation allows us to extend the knot invariant to embedded graphs and higher-dimensional knots. We calculate the knot invariant for two-bridge knots and relate it to double branched covers for general knots.
We exhibit the first examples of links which are homologically thin but not quasi-alternating. To show that they are not quasi-alternating, we argue that none of their branched double-covers bounds a negative definite 4-manifold with non-torsion H1. Using this method, we also complete the determination of the quasi-alternating pretzel links.
In this note we construct examples of covers of the projective line in positive characteristic such that every specialization is inseparable. The result illustrates that it is not possible to construct all covers of the generic r-pointed curve of genus zero inductively from covers with a smaller number of branch points. 2000 Mathematical Subject Classification: Primary 14H30, 14H10 Let k be an ...
We associate to each toric vector bundle on a toric variety X(∆) a “branched cover” of the fan ∆ together with a piecewise-linear function on the branched cover. This construction generalizes the usual correspondence between toric Cartier divisors and piecewise-linear functions. We apply this combinatorial geometric technique to study the moduli of toric vector bundles with fixed equivariant Ch...
We show that hyperelliptic symplectic Lefschetz fibrations are symplectically birational to two-fold covers of rational ruled surfaces, branched in a symplectically embedded surface. This reduces the classification of genus 2 fibrations to the classification of certain symplectic submanifolds in rational ruled surfaces.
We study “pure-cycle” Hurwitz spaces, parametrizing covers of the projective line having only one ramified point over each branch point. We start with the case of genus-0 covers, using a combination of limit linear series theory and group theory to show that these spaces are always irreducible. In the case of four branch points, we also compute the associated Hurwitz numbers. Finally, we give a...
