The hydrogen-like muonium atom (μe) consists of a positive muon (μ) and an electron (e−). Since it was first observed by Hughes et al. in 1960 [1], a series of precision experiments could be carried out testing bound state Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) and the nature of the muon as a point-like leptonic particle [2]. Precision values for fundamental constants could be obtained, including the fi...

We reanalyse the question whether the quantum Bogomolnyi bound is saturated in the two-dimensional supersymmetric kink and sine-Gordon models. Our starting point is the usual expression for the one-loop correction to the mass of a soliton in terms of sums over zero-point energies. To regulate these sums, most authors put the system in a box with suitable boundary conditions, and impose an ultra...

Inspired by the concept of complementarity, we present a illustrative model for the weak interactions with unbroken gauge symmetry and unbroken supersymmetry. The observable particles are bound states of some more fundamental particles. Supersymmetry is broken at the macroscopic scale of the observable particles by a discrete symmetry but remains exact at the scale of the fundamental particle a...

We present a practical method to solve Faddeev three-body equations at energies above three-body breakup threshold as integral equations in coordinate space. This is an extension of previously used method for bound states and scattering states below three-body breakup threshold energy. We show that breakup components in three-body reactions produce long-range effects on Faddeev integral kernels...

A systematic procedure to study one-dimensional Schrödinger equation with a position-dependent effective mass (PDEM) in the kinetic energy operator is explored. The conventional free-particle problem reveals an interesting situation in that, in the presence of a mass background, formation of bound states is signalled. We also discuss coordinate-transformed, constant-mass Schrödinger equation, i...

We consider supersymmetric Sp(2N) gauge theories with F matter fields in the defining representation, one matter field in the adjoint representation, and no superpotential. We construct a sequence of dual descriptions of this theory using the dualities of Seiberg combined with the “deconfinement” method introduced by Berkooz. Our duals hint at a new non-perturbative phenomenon that seems to be ...

We discuss the possibility of extracting phase shifts from finite volume energies for meson-meson scattering, where the mesons are fermion-antifermion bound states of the massive Schwinger model with SU(2) flavour symmetry. The existence of analytical strong coupling predictions for the mass spectrum and for the scattering phases makes it possible to test the reliability of numerical results.

It has been observed recently that many properties of some near extremal black holes can be described in terms of bound states of D-branes. Using a non-renormalization theorem we argue that the D-brane description is the correct quantum gravity description of the black hole at low energies. The low energy theory includes the black hole degrees of freedom that account for the entropy and describ...

Bound states that can occur in coupled quantum wires are investigated. We consider a two-dimensional configuration in which two parallel waveguides (of different widths) are coupled laterally through a finite length window and construct modes which exist local to the window connecting the two guides. We study both modes above and below the first cut-off for energy propagation down the coupled g...

Properties of bound states for Schrr odinger operators are reviewed. These include: bounds on the number of bound states and on the moments of the energy levels, existence and nonexistence of bound states, phase space bounds and semi-classical results, the special case of central potentials, and applications of these bounds in quantum mechanics of many particle systems and dynamical systems. Fo...
