BACKGROUND The safety and timing of venous thromboembolism (VTE) prophylaxis in patients with blunt splenic injuries is not well known. We hypothesized that early initiation of VTE prophylaxis does not increase failure of nonoperative management or transfusion requirements in these patients. METHODS A retrospective review of trauma patients with blunt splenic injury was performed. Patients we...
To summarize characteristics of delayed intestinal necrosis following blunt abdominal trauma seen in the past 10 years, to improve diagnostic accuracy and curative effects. We retrospectively analyzed clinical data from patients with delayed intestinal necrosis following blunt abdominal trauma, who were admitted to Shanghai Changhai Hospital affiliated with Second Military Medical University, C...
Computed tomography (CT) plays a major role in diagnosis of blunt abdominal trauma of haemodynamically-stable children. The purpose of this article is to review the CT findings in children with hepatic, splenic, renal, adrenal, pancreatic, bowel, and mesentery injuries and in children with blunt abdominal trauma and active haemorrhage.
Trauma is a leading cause of death in younger individuals. Blunt abdominal trauma has the potential to mask severe injuries-there can be serious organ or vascular injury underneath intact skin. Increasingly, there is a trend toward nonoperative management of blunt abdominal trauma. We report the case of a left hepatic artery transection managed in the interventional radiology suite.
Children have an high risk of renal damage as a result of blunt trauma. Conservative management is always recommended for lower grades (I to III) but is rather controversial whenever high grade injuries (grade IV and V) are concerned. We describe a case of successful conservative management in grade IV renal injury occurred in a 9-years-old girl with blunt trauma.
Generally speaking, isolated pancreatic injuries are rare after abdominal blunt trauma. However, the incidence of pancreatic injuries in children has risen in recent decades. Pancreatic pseudocyst represents a typical complication after acute pancreatitis due to blunt abdominal trauma. Spontaneous rupture of pseudocysts leading to acute abdominal pain has been described, however, it rarely occu...
Blunt or nonpenetrating trauma to the head and neck occasionally results in damage to the cervical segment of the internal carotid artery. This may produce neurologic signs and symptoms that mimic acute craniocerebral injury. The mortality and morbidity associated with these injuries are alarmingly high. These injuries may be missed if one relies only on computed tomography. Angiography is stil...
