Abstract Background: In 2007, a rule prohibiting the use of incinerators was ratified by the Iranian Islamic Parliament. Based on this rule, the Ministry of Health emphasized the sterilization of infectious waste at its production source by means of non-incineration equipment and methods. This research examined the performance of non-incineration technologies in treating medical infectious and ...

Landfills generate emissions over long periods, often longer than a lifetime. The longest lasting emission is leachate. In order to estimate the future requirements for leachate treatment, different kinds of leaching tests may be applied. In this paper, shaking leaching tests (SLT), landfill-simulator leaching tests and a field-cell leaching test performed with ash, municipal solid waste (MSW) ...

Background and purpose: Toxicity, high levels and complex nature of petroleum hydrocarbons in drill cutting can endanger human health since many of these compounds are among carcinogenic hazardous waste components. This study aimed at comparing the effect of compost and vermincompost processes in removing petroleum hydrocarbons from drill cutting located in Ahvaz oil field with sewage sludge. ...

The biological treatment of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste represents the most spread strategy to pursue the biological stabilization of this residual stream, under either aerobic or anaerobic conditions. Anaerobic digestion is an attractive technology for the conversion of organic substrates into methane, but the handling of the residual stream, namely the digestate, can prove t...

Almost three years on from commissioning, the unique $30M domestic wastewater treatment approach developed by Hastings District Council (HDC) and consultants MWH has proven itself to be leading-edge, technically-robust, cost-effective and culturally-acceptable. An innovative “no sludge” solution was adopted that has resulted in a paradigm shift in wastewater planning and treatment in New Zealan...

Composting is a natural biological process which results in the degradation of organic waste to a stable end product, commonly referred to as compost, which can be utilized for various agricultural purposes. Increasing landfill costs and regulations which limit many types of waste accepted at landfills has increased interest in composting as a component of waste management (Goldstein and Spence...

Efficient treatment of pharmaceutical waste is a big challenge because of the enormous quantity, complexity and hazardous nature. Lack of implementation of effective treatment technology aggravates the situations further in the countries facing the challenges of rising population, increasing urbanisation and industrialization generating enormous quantities of industrial wastes. This paper criti...

A nucleic acid-based method for the detection of the bacterial pathogens Salmonella spp. and Listeria monocytogenes in biological waste was developed. The detection limits were less than 10 cells per ml of biological waste. The method does not include a phenol extraction step and can be easily performed in 1 to 2 days.

I wi Brou t t Bowrr. Corporare Rescwc-li CRB. CH-.The performance of highly doped SnO, anodes for the oxidative treatment of biologically refractory ~ a s t e water was compared with PbO, and Pt. The oxidation of a wide range of organic compounds proceeds with a n efficiency which is about 5 times higher than with platinum anodes. The oxidation efficiency was found to be independent of the pH o...
