A high-throughput bioassay system to evaluate the efficacy of residual pesticides against mosquitoes and muscid flies with minimal insect handling was developed. The system consisted of 4 components made of readily available materials: 1) a CO2 anaesthetizing chamber, 2) a specialized aspirator, 3) a cylindrical flat-bottomed glass bioassay chamber assembly, and 4) a customized rack.

Five datasets were constructed from ligand and bioassay result data from the literature. These datasets include bioassay results from the Ames mutagenicity assay, Greenscreen GADD-45a-GFP assay, Syrian Hamster Embryo (SHE) assay, and 2 year rat carcinogenicity assay results. These datasets provide information about chemical mutagenicity, genotoxicity and carcinogenicity.

We describe an innovative aspirator gun designed to transfer individual anesthetized mosquitoes directly into glass bioassay tubes. The gun has been used for thousands of transfers with extremely low associated mortality and is the central component of a high-throughput bioassay system. The gun is constructed using readily obtainable materials and can be modified for a range of insects.

A novel DNA bioassay-on-chip using surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) on a bimetallic nanowave chip is presented. In this bioassay, SERS signals were measured after a single reaction on the chip's surface without any washing step, making it simple-to-use and reducing the reagent cost. Using the technique, specific oligonucleotide sequences of the dengue virus 4 were detected.

This paper presents the in vivo and in situ evaluation of a system that wirelessly monitors the accumulation of biliary sludge in a plastic biliary stent. The sensing element, located within the stent, is a passive array of magnetoelastic resonators that is queried by a wireless electromagnetic signal. The in vivo and in situ testing uses commercially-available plastic biliary stents, each enha...

Candida albicans is an important human fungal pathogen, in terms of both its clinical significance and its use as an experimental model for scientific investigation. Although this opportunistic pathogen is a natural component of the human flora, it can cause life-threatening infections in immunosuppressed patients. There are currently a limited number of antifungal molecules and drug targets, a...

A specific resonance light scattering bioassay for homocysteine is developed on the basis of target-involved assembly of polyethyleneimine-capped Ag-nanoclusters. The bioassay permits discriminating homocysteine from cysteine, glutathione and other amino acids, and allows sensitive and selective detection of homocysteine with a detection limit of 42 nM.

Chemical studies of a Bacillus endophyticus isolated from a Bahamian hypersaline microbial mat led to the isolation of bacillamides B and C, new tryptamide thiazole metabolites. Bioassay-guided fractionation using a HPLC-UV-MS bioassay technique enabled the detection of these trace fermentation products, and their total structures were elucidated by combined spectroscopic techniques.

The human monoclonal antibody CP-870,893 is a CD40 receptor agonist currently being developed for the treatment of cancer. A bioassay to measure neutralizing antibodies (Nab) to CP-870,893 in 5% human serum matrix was developed and validated utilizing the Daudi cell line and flow cytometric detection. Additionally, samples from CP-870,893 treated cynomolgus monkeys were analyzed in the bioassay...

Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) is an economically important pathogen. It has been demonstrated that PCV2 DNA can be detected in boar semen by PCR; however, the biological relevance of this is unknown. The objectives of this study were to determine if semen positive for PCV2 DNA is infectious (1) in a swine bioassay, or (2) when used for artificial insemination. For the first objective, 4-week...
