Genetic diversity and phylogenetic relationships among 22 local cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) varieties and inbred lines collected throughout Senegal were evaluated using simple sequence repeat molecular markers. A set of 49 primer combinations were developed from cowpea genomic/expressed sequence tags and evaluated for their ability to detect polymorphisms among the various cowpea genotypes....

In this study we evaluated the crystal violet decolorization assay (CVDA) for detection of minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of antituberculosis drugs. 53 isolates were tested in this study and 13 of them were multidrug resistant (MDR) isolates. The antibiotics concentrations were 2-0.06 mg/L for isoniazid (INH) and rifampicin (RIF) and were 16-0.25 mg/L for streptomycin (STM) and ethambut...

Sodium azide-crystal violet-agar and a modified blood-azide (MBA)-agar were used to isolate Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae from swine tissues. There was no significant difference in the number of isolations. However, 78% of the isolants from modified blood-azide medium required only 24 hr of incubation, whereas all of the isolants obtained on sodium azide-crystal violet medium required 48 hr.

1. Small dumps of the luminous cells of Mnemiopsis cannot readily be stimulated mechanically but will luminesce on treatment with saponin solution. Larger groups of luminous cells (such as are connected with two paddle plates) luminesce on mechanical stimulation. This suggests that mechanical stimulation to luminesce occurs chiefly through a nerve mechanism which has been broken up in the small...

BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of a new instrument to optimize the size, shape, and centration of anterior capsulorhexis. METHODS The study was divided into two parts. The first part was done in 10 goats' eyes. A specially designed capsulorhexis marker was used. The lower edge of the instrument was stained by gentian violet and then applied to the...

The effects of lights with different wavelengths on the growth and the yield of extracellular polysaccharides of Nostoc flagelliforme cells were investigated in a liquid cultivation. N. flagelliforme cells were cultured for 16 days in 500 ml conical flasks containing BG11 culture medium under 27 micromol·m-2·s-1 of light intensity and 25 degrees C on a rotary shaker (140 rpm). The chlorophyll a...

Background and Aims: Dry skin is one of the most common skin complications associated with chronic renal failure in hemodialysis patients. Aloe vera gel and Violet oil can be effective in improving the symptoms of dryness through special mechanisms. Therefore, this study aimed to compare the topical effect of Aloe vera and Violet with hydroxyzine on dry skin of hemodialysis patients. Materials...
