BACKGROUND AND AIMS Lactate levels predict outcomes after hepatectomy. We compared metabolic effects of lactated versus lactate free solutions in living donor hepatectomy. METHODS Consecutive right lobe donors (n = 53) were alternatively allotted to lactated Ringer's solution and normal saline (Group L-control) or acetated crystalloid (Sterofundin B Braun® Group S -study group) in an observat...

WINNING ABSTRACT: We studied the role of base excess (BE) as marker of chronic hypercapnia and survival in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and chronic hypercapnic respiratory failure (CHRF). Moreover, it was investigated whether the effects of non-invasive positive pressure ventilation (NPPV) on CHRF were reflected in BE and survival. In 240 (160 without exacerbation)...

We introduce a pragmatic approach towards the corrected Base Excess (BE) by including the large variability of the apparent dissociation constant pK' in non-logarithmic form in Henderson-Hasselbach bicarbonate ion equilibria thereby resulting in a significant correction both in calculated bicarbonate ion concentration and BE at 37 degrees C.

In a recent issue of CHEST (February 2015), Manuel et al 1 reported an original study on obese subjects suggesting that a raised bicarbonate concentration ([HCO 3 2 ]), without awake hypercapnia, could allow the early detection of obesity hypoventilation syndrome (OHS). Since bicarbonate was announced as a potential discriminant biomarker, methodologic issues about its determination should be ...

the use of genotyping to stratify patients according to the risk of a disease, such as prolonged QT interval syndrome or myocardial infarction; the use of genotyping to increase our understanding of drug pharmacokinetics and pharmocodynamics; and the use of genetics for tissue engineering and the cloning of several different species. Recently, the National Human Genome Research Institute announ...

Background Lactate measurement is the key component in septic shock identification and resuscitation. However, point-of-care lactate testing is not widely used due to the lack of access to nearby test equipment. Biomarkers such as serum lactate, anion gap (AG), and base excess (BE) are used in determining shock in patients with seemingly normal vital signs. Purpose We aimed to determine if th...

The arterial acid-base balance and other selected physiologic measures of physically restrained and chemically immobilized nonhuman primates from the families Callithricidae, Cebidae, Cercopithecidae, and Pongidae were compared. The physically restrained primates had significantly lower pH, pCO2, and base excess values, but they had significantly higher pO2 values, rectal temperatures, and puls...

BACKGROUND Reperfusion injury and the acid-base status of the transplant are important factors affecting post-transplantation graft function. OBJECTIVE We hypothesized that infusing hypertonic saline (HS) or tight control of acid-base status of the blood rushing through renal graft using sodium bicarbonate may have beneficial effects on early graft function. METHODS Candidates for deceased-...

It has been suggested that hepatic urea synthesis, which consumes[Formula: see text], plays an important role in acid-base homeostasis. This study measured urea synthesis rate (Ra urea) directly to assess its role in determining the acid-base status in patients with end-stage cirrhosis and after orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT). Cirrhotic patients were studied before surgery ( n = 7) and ...

Attention was called recently (1) to the occurrence of hyperproteinemia in patients with lymphogranuloma inguinale. Thirty-five cases have now been examined, in 26 of whom the protein content of the serum exceeded 8.0 per cent (Table I). Williams and Gutman (1, 2) pointed out that the hyperglobulinemia observed in lymphogranuloma inguinale would account, in part, for two interesting phenomena a...
