Brucella spp. are Gram-negative, facultative intracellular coccobacilli that cause one of the most frequently encountered zoonosis worldwide. Humans naturally acquire infection through consumption of contaminated dairy and meat products and through direct exposure to aborted animal tissues and fluids. No vaccine against brucellosis is available for use in humans. In this study, we tested the ab...

Rabbit immunoglobulin (Ig)M and IgG antibodies to Brucella abortus and Bordetella pertussis were isolated as purified products and their specific secondary biological activities were compared. IgM antibodies were found to be more active than IgG proteins in inducing agglutination and sensitization of B. abortus for the complement-dependent bactericidal effect and in inhibiting B. pertussis-indu...

In this study, we explore the regulatory roles of pro-inflammatory cytokine tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF) in the innate immunity of macrophages against B. abortus infection. We show that infection of macrophage with B. abortus induces marked expression and secretion of TNF which subsequently binds to TNF receptor 1 (TNFR-1) and activates a downstream signaling cascade of the innate immunity...

Moreira-Jacob (J. Bacteriol. 86:599, 1963) reported that 44 strains of Brucella suis were inhibited by safranin 0 in Brucella Agar (Albimi), whereas nearly all of 320 other strains of Brucella were not inhibited. Brinley-Morgan (World Health Organization, Brucellosis document , 246, 1963) examined the growth of more than 80 cultures on serum dextrose agar with added safranin 0, and found that a...

Neurobrucellosis has been reported to cause lesions in a number of different locations in the central nervous system. Histologically or radiologically, these lesions were consistent with an infection. In response to parents who believed their child's brain tumor, histologically typical of medulloblastoma, was in reality neurobrucellosis, formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tumor tissue from the me...

Brucellosis is primarily a worldwide zoonotic disease caused by Brucella species. The genus Brucella contains highly infectious species that are classified as biological threat agents. In this regard, the identification of Brucella can be a time-consuming and labor-intensive process posing a real risk of laboratory-acquired infection to the laboratory staff. This stud...

Brucellosis in humans is a zoonosis of greatly varied clinical image. It occurs on all inhabited continents. The course of the disease may be acute, sub-acute or chronic. The etiologic factors of brucellosis are small, aerobic Gram-negative rods of the genus Brucella, which currently contains ten species: B. abortus, B. suis, B. ovis, B. melitensis, B. canis, B. neotomae, B. pinnipedialis, B. c...

Brucellosis, caused by Brucella abortus is a major disease of cattle and a zoonosis. In order to estimate the bovine brucellosis prevalence in Costa Rica (CR), a total 765 herds (13078 bovines) from six regions of CR were randomly sampled during 2012-2013. A non-random sample of 7907 herds (532199 bovines) of the six regions, arriving for diagnoses during 2014-2016 to the Costa Rican Animal Hea...

We report the cloning and sequencing of the Brucella abortus oxyR homolog and provide evidence that the transcription product of this gene binds to the B. abortus catalase promoter region. A gene replacement/deletion Brucella oxyR mutant exhibits increased sensitivity to prolonged exposure to H(2)O(2) and is unable to adapt to H(2)O(2) in the environment.

Brucella abortus is divided into eight biovars, of which biovars 1 to 3 are the most frequently represented biovars in strains isolated from humans. Here, we report the genome sequence of B. abortus strain BCB034, a strain isolated from a human patient and that belongs to biovar 2.
