Recent technical and strategical developments have increased the survival chances for avalanche victims. Still hundreds of people, primarily recreationists, get caught and buried by snow avalanches every year. About 100 die each year in the European Alps-and many more worldwide. Refining concepts for avalanche rescue means to optimize the procedures such that the survival chances are maximized ...
We study avalanches of spike activity in fully connected networks of integrate-andre neurons which receive purely random input. In contrast to the self-organized critical avalanche behavior in sandpile models, critical and non-critical behavior is found depending on the interaction strength. Avalanche behavior can be readily understood by using combinatorial arguments in phase space.
This is a review article of our work on hysteresis, avalanches, and criticality. We provide an extensive introduction to scaling and renormalization–group ideas, and discuss analytical and numerical results for size distributions, correlation functions, magnetization, avalanche durations and average avalanche shapes, and power spectra. We focus here on applications to magnetic Barkhausen noise,...
To provide guidance to clinicians and avalanche professionals about best practices, the Wilderness Medical Society convened an expert panel to develop evidence-based guidelines for the prevention, rescue, and medical management of avalanche and nonavalanche snow burial victims. Recommendations are graded on the basis of quality of supporting evidence according to the classification scheme of th...
There is experimental evidence that cortical neurons show avalanche activity with the intensity of firing events being distributed as a power-law. We present a biologically plausible extension of a neural network which exhibits a power-law avalanche distribution for a wide range of connectivity parameters.
This data presents analyzed data exports of Austrian torrent and avalanche cadaster (TAC) in May 2015. The TAC is developed by Austrian Service for Torrent and Avalanche Control. Data are viewed from different aspects and combinations geographically in the area of Lower Austria, a province of Austria.
We report balanced InGaAs/InP single photon avalanche diodes (SPADs) operated in sinusoidal gating mode with a tunable phase shifter to reduce common mode noise. This technique enables detection of small avalanche pulses, which results in reduced afterpulsing. For laser repletion rate of 20 MHz at 240 K, the dark count rate for photon detection efficiency of 10% is 8.9 kHz.
