Throughout this work we deal with a natural number g ≥ 2 and with an algebraically closed field k whose characteristic differs from 2. A hyperelliptic curve of genus g over k is a smooth curve of genus g, that is a double cover of the projective line P. The Riemann-Hurwitz formula implies that this covering should be ramified at 2g + 2 points. Because of this explicit description, hyperelliptic...

In this article we apply signal detection theory to qualitatively unify the intensity justnoticable difference (JND) and masking data of Wegel and Lane (1924), Fletcher and Munson (1933 – 1938), Miller (1947), and Egan and Hake (1950). We do this by treating the loudness as the first moment, and the intensity JND as the second moment, of the random variable we call the single-trial loudness. Fr...

The relationship between species diversity and sampled area is fundamental to ecology. Traditionally, theories of the species-area relationship have been dominated by random-placement models. Such models were used to formulate the canonical theory of species-area curves and species abundances. In this paper, however, armed with a detailed data set from a moist tropical forest, we investigate th...

We assemble and reorganize the recent work in the area of hyperelliptic pairings: We survey the research on constructing hyperelliptic curves suitable for pairing-based cryptography. We also showcase the hyperelliptic pairings proposed to date, and develop a unifying framework. We discuss the techniques used to optimize the pairing computation on hyperelliptic curves, and present many direction...

The present cross-sectional, population-based study was designed to evaluate the performance of the FEV1/FEV6 ratio for the detection of airway-obstructed subjects compared to the FEV1/FVC <0.70 fixed ratio test, as well as the lower limit of normality (LLN) for 1000 subjects (3)40 years of age in the metropolitan area of São Paulo, SP, Brazil. After the exclusion of 37 (3.7%) spirometries, a t...

Background and Objective: Sulfur mustard (SM) is a chemical warfare agent used by the Iraqi forces during the Iraq-Iran war. So far some statistical methods have only been applied to discriminate between exposed and non-exposed Sardasht inhabitants, using immunological variables. This paper focuses on allocating objects to exposed and non-exposed groups and choosing the best model, using a vari...

We construct a Sierpinski carpet E ⊂ R of area zero and a K0 > 1 with the property that every K0-quasiconformal image of E contains rectifiable curves, but such that E has some quasiconformal image containing no non-constant rectifiable curves. 1991 Mathematics Subject Classification. We discuss the relationship P 2 = nA for a triangle with integer sides, with perimeter P and area A, where n is an integer. We show that the problem reduces to finding rational points of infinite order in a family of elliptic curves. The geometry of the curves plays a crucial role in finding real triangles.
