A review is made of linear slender-body methods for predicting the squat of a ship in shallow open water, dredged channels or canals. The results are summarized into a general formula based on Fourier transforms, and the method is extended to cater to stepped canals. An approximate solution for canals of arbitrary cross-section is proposed.

The aim of this paper is to study a finite element numerical approximation of steady flows of an incompressible viscoelastic Oldroyd-B fluid in curved pipes of arbitrary cross-section and curvature ratio. Using rectangular toroidal coordinates, existence and uniqueness of approximated solutions are proved as well as a priori error estimates, under a natural restriction on the pipe curvature ratio.

In this paper, static spacetimes with a topological structure of R2 ×N is studied, where N is an arbitrary manifold. Well known Schwarzschild spacetime and Reissner-Nordström spacetime are special cases. It is shown that the existence of a constant and positive surface gravity κ ensures the existence of the Killing horizon, with the cross section homeomorphic to N .

The uniqueness theorem is proved for the linearized problem describing radiation and scattering of time-harmonic water waves by a vertical shell having an arbitrary horizontal cross-section. The uniqueness holds for all frequencies, and various locations of the shell are possible: surface-piercing, totally immersed and bottom-standing. A version of integral equation technique is outlined for fi...

Spontaneous emission of an atom (molecule) placed near a nanocylin-der of elliptical cross-section of an arbitrary composition is studied. The analytical expressions have been obtained for the radiative and nonradia-tive channels of spontaneous decay and investigated in details.

Delamination fracture of a two-dimensional functionally graded multilayered four-point bending beam that exhibits non-linear behaviour of the material is analyzed. The fracture is studied analytically in terms of the strain energy release rate. The beam under consideration has an arbitrary number of layers. Each layer has individual thickness and material properties. A delamination crack is loc...

Victor L. Berdichevsky Mechanical Engineering, Wayne State University, Detroit MI 48202 USA; e-mail: [email protected] (Dated: March 2016) Abstract A continuum theory of dislocations is suggested which is capable of predicting the equilibrium distributions of a large number of screw dislocations in anisotropic beams with arbitrary cross-section. The theory leads to a boundary value problem wi...

The Binary-Encounter-Bethe (BEB) model for electron-impact total ionization cross sections has been applied to [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] and H3O(+). The cross sections for the hydrocarbon ions are needed for modeling cool plasmas in fusion devices. No experimental data are available for direct com...
