Since 1960s Community aquaculture gained its importance in India through the attempts of Research and Development agencies. Demonstration of fish culture practices in community ponds are challenged by its nature as water bodies are common property resources which requires substantial support from communities, local bodies and other agencies. Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Khordha, the Farm Science ...

Lipids are the predominant source of energy for fish. The mechanisms by which fish allocate energy from lipids, for metabolism, development, growth and reproduction are critical for understanding key life history strategies and transitions. Currently, the major lipid component in aquaculture diets is fish oil (FO), derived from wild capture fisheries that are exploited at their maximum sustaina...

Africa has big potential for fi sh farming with 37 per cent of its surface area suitable for artisanal and 43 per cent suitable for commercial fi sh production (Aguilar-Manjarrez and Nath 1998). Although Africa contributed less than 1 per cent to global aquaculture production (251 000 t in 1999), the production has been expanding since 1984 at a rate equal to or greater than the global rate, al...

Aquaculture is considered as a viable source for providing high quality and cheap protein, particularly for developing countries with protein shortages. However, due to its complexities, aquaculture development planning can be difficult without the aid of modern decisionmaking technologies such as decision support systems (DSS). DSS are widely used in the business and manufacturing sectors, but...

Automated water quality monitoring systems can be used to help maintain optimal levels of dissolved oxygen (DO) in aquaculture systems by continuously monitoring oxygen concentrations and immediately turning on aerators to supplement oxygen if a critical limit is reached. This study compares differences in water quality maintenance under operation schemes using manual and automated water qualit...

Epidemiological studies have been conducted to determine the association between fish and disease. The fish were obtained from rivers, streams, ponds and lakes but few from aquaculture farms. While no defined studies have been carried out in Malaysia, baseline data show that fish obtained from aquaculture farms (mixed farming) contributed to cases of opisthorchiasis and clonorchiasis.
