CD19 is a B cell-surface molecule that participates as an important regulatory signaling complex for antigen bound at the surface by Ig. Triggering of CD19 through its linkage with CD21 amplifies signals transduced through the Src family kinases and modulates B cell differentiation in response to antigen. This study examines the kinetics of antigen uptake and processing of antigen directly targ...

We describe a 16 year old boy with acne fulminans associated with axial and peripheral polyarthritis. The patient's clinical course and therapy with isotretinoin, prednisolone and oxytetracycline are described. A possible association between the presence of HLA -B 27 antigen and reactive arthritis with acne fulminans in this case is evaluated. A review of the literature is included.

Using Epstein-Barr virus B cell clones and antigen-specific T cell clones, we asked how antigen-antibody complexes are handled by B cells. We found that the only B cells capable of efficient presentation of antigen-antibody complexes are those that bind the complexes via membrane immunoglobulin, i.e., rheumatoid factor-producing B cells and, to a lower extent, antigen-specific B cells. On the c...

Background: Improving vaccine potency in the induction of a strong cell-mediated cytotoxicity can enhance the efficacy of vaccines. Necrotic cells and the supernatant of necrotic tumor cells are attractive adjuvants, on account of their ability to recruit antigen-presenting cells to the site of antigen synthesis as well as its ability to stimulate the maturation of dendritic cells. Objective: T...

B-cell maturation antigen is expressed on plasma cells. In this study, we have identified serum B-cell maturation antigen as a novel biomarker that can monitor and predict outcomes for multiple myeloma patients. Compared to healthy donors, patients with multiple myeloma showed elevated serum B-cell maturation antigen levels (P<0.0001). Serum B-cell maturation antigen levels correlated with the ...

B-cells are promising candidate autologous antigen-presenting cells (APCs) to prime antigen-specific T-cells both in vitro and in vivo. However to date, a significant barrier to utilizing B-cells as APCs is their low capacity for non-specific antigen uptake compared to "professional" APCs such as dendritic cells. Here we utilize a microfluidic device that employs many parallel channels to pass ...

An increasing number of infertile, hepatitis B virus-infected individuals have opted for assisted reproductive technology. However, the impact of the hepatitis B virus carrier serostatus on neonatal outcomes has not been evaluated. Data from 504 patients who delivered singletons were analyzed. In females, hepatitis B surface antigen, hepatitis B e antigen, and antibody to hepatitis core antigen...

Fulminant hepatic failure occurred in an 11 week old baby of a Caucasian mother who was hepatitis B surface antigen positive, B e antigen negative, and B e antibody positive. Infants of hepatitis B e antigen positive mothers receive immunoprophylaxis against hepatitis, unlike those born to mothers who are B e antibody positive.

Two monoclonal mouse antibodies with specificities for group B streptococcal capsular antigens were evaluated in assays for the identification of group B streptococci (GBS). One of these antibodies (A9) was shown to precipitate group B carbohydrate antigen in reactions with both purified group B antigen and antigen present in autoclave or enzyme extracts of GBS. A9 antibody was also specific fo...
