A biocathode was designed by the modification of a carbon nanotube (CNT) gas-diffusion electrode with bilirubin oxidase from Bacillus pumilus, achieving high current densities up to 3 mA cm(-2) for the reduction of O2 from air. A membraneless air-breathing hydrogen biofuel cell was designed by combination of this cathode with a functionalized CNT-based hydrogenase anode.

Novel hierarchically porous and nitrogen, sulfur-codoped graphene-like microspheres (3D NS-GSs) are synthesized using Ni microspheres as the template and using poly(vinylpyrrolidone) and (NH4)2S2O8 as the carbon and nitrogen precursor, respectively. As an anode material in lithium ion batteries, the 3D NS-GS electrode displays a superior capacity with excellent cycling stability.

Bacterial biofilms were exposed to electrolysis by making the steel substratum an electrode in a circuit including a 6-V battery. These treatments resulted in killing (2.1-log reduction) and removal (4.0-log reduction) of viable cells at the anode and cathode, respectively, within a few minutes.
