Despite the tremendous attention given to conservation projects in the Neotropics, few published studies have documented remote sensing studies in tropical highland areas. Even fewer publications have addressed the use of topographic normalization methods in these regions. This article discusses the influence of anisotropic reflectance patterns on land cover classification for two study areas c...

The subgenus Scaptia (Lepmia) Fairchild, known only from mountainous areas of Southeast of Brazil, is redescribed and illustrated. It is contrasted with similar species of Scaptia (Pseudoscione). It is more similar to the Australian Myioscaptia and Plinthina than to the other New World Scaptia subgenera.

Three new species: Rhyacobates zetteli sp.n., R. angustus sp.n., and R. constrictus sp.n., all from mountainous areas of northern Vietnam, are described. With these new taxa, a total of six species of Rhyacobates has been recorded from       Vietnam. A key to species of Rhyacobates occurring in Vietnam is provided.

BACKGROUND Self-rated health status and healthcare services utilization are important indicators to evaluate the performance of health system. In disadvantaged areas, however, little is known about the access and outcomes of health care services. This study aimed to assess health-related quality of life (HRQOL), health status and healthcare access and utilization of residents in mountainous and...

15.1 INTRODUCTION Snow cover is an important earth surface characteristic because it influences partitioning of the surface radiation, energy, and hydrologic budgets. Snow is also an important source of moisture for agricultural crops and water supply in many higher latitude or mountainous areas. For instance, snowmelt provides approximately

We explored the process of urbanization in a mountainous area to seek a sustainable urbanization strategy. Previous urbanization research has mainly focused on flat terrain and coastal areas, and urbanization in mountainous areas remains poorly understood. This study integrated geographic information systems, remote sensing, and statistical analysis to quantify landscape patterns dynamics in re...

Accurate estimation of rainfall in mountainous areas is necessary for various water resource-related applications. Though rain gauges accurately measure rainfall, they are rarely found in mountainous regions and satellite rainfall data can be used as an alternative source over these regions. This study evaluated the performance of three high-resolution satellite rainfall products, the Tropical ...

We combine light detection and ranging (LiDAR) digital terrain model (DTM) data and an improved mesh implementation to investigate the effects of highresolution surface topography on seismic ground motion based upon the spectralelement method. In general, topography increases the amplitude of shaking at mountain tops and ridges, whereas valleys usually have reduced ground motion, as has been ob...

Several studies have suggested that large bodies of water are a main source of infection with mycobacteria other than tuberculosis (MOTT). If this is correct, there should be a gradient in the infection rate with MOTT between mountainous and seaside areas. To test this hypothesis, we performed skin testing with tuberculin and sensitins in 19,470 Greek Armed Forces recruits. Initially, several M...
