were measured in eight healthy males by simultaneous ileal and colonic perfusion. Ileal flow was increased by PGF2e (six subjects)from a mean of 169 ml min-1 to 4 63 ml min-1 (p < 0.01); it also increased in the two subjects given PGE2. Colonic absorptive function was not significantly diminished by either prostaglandin. These results suggest that diarrhoea due to prostaglandins originates in t...

A 44-year-old woman is described with an endocrine tumour arising in the kidney. There were associated abnormalities of small intestinal morphology, motility, and absorptive function. These abnormalities reversed on removal of the tumour. Detailed studies showed that the tumour contained, and was secreting, glucagon. It is postulated that the intestinal abnormalities may have resulted from gluc...

In some epithelia, mucosal exposure to osmotic loads produces an increase in transepithelial resistance that is presumed to relate to the collapse of the paracellular spaces. Since proximal small intestinal epithelium may transiently encounter osmotic loads during normal digestion, we examined the short-term effect of osmotic loads on resistance and on epithelial structure of mucosal sheets pre...

This study uses the concept of absorptive capacity to provide a framework for exploring benefit realization in the post-implementation phase of ERP systems. Success factors of ERP adoption such as: training, communication, process change, and integration extension are organized into two types of knowledge absorptive capacity: potential capacity and realization capacity. This study proposes that...

Thus, actors in an economy must constantly update their knowledge to keep pace with ongoing changes in their operational environment. This study explores unlearning's influence on two forms of learning (i.e., exploration and exploitation of ...

This study explores if firms using RFID are characterized by higher levels of selected absorptive capacity attributes. Data from 37 firms is used to test the key proposition. The data confirms that firms complying with RFID mandates have higher levels of absorptive capacity attributes than their noncompliant counterparts.

Background: Total colectomy is used in children with total colonic aganglionosis, Ulcerative colitis (UC) and familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP). The purpose of this study was to maintain ileocecal valve and rectal-sparing surgery for the prevention of fecal incontinence in these children. Methods: From1990 to 2011, 14 children with diagnosis of UC, FAP and Hirschsprung’s disease were operat...

Highly absorptive thin films serve as the active layer of a new class of photonic devices based on the strong coupling of light and matter. In order to develop these devices into a new field of integrated photonics, methods for analysis, patterning, and deposition of the active layer are necessary. This thesis develops these methods and applies them to thin films of J-aggregates grown in a laye...

The main function of the porcine intestinal tract is nutrient digestion and absorption. This function is performed by the absorptive enterocytes, which are differentiated from the intestinal stem cells residing at the bottom of the crypt. Nutrients such as glucose and amino acids are transported, absorbed by various transporters embedded on the membranes of these enterocytes. Metabolism occurs ...
