The consideration of iron effects on marine ecosystems has focused mainly on high-nitrate low-chlorophyll regions, but iron likely has an equally important regulatory role in coastal waters. Iron requirements of neritic phytoplankton not only are comparatively high but also differ substantially among species, so that iron fluctuations within metal-replete systems should strongly influence the c...

In this paper, we present a novel near field transducer (NFT) design concept for heat assisted recording. design, metal bars separated by thin dielectric are used to form resonance plasmonic grating with distributed feedback (DFB). The motivation such structure is the use of separation enhancing material stability at elevated temperature so that best materials can be without compromising much n...

Room-temperature nanoimprinted, DNA-based distributed feedback (DFB) laser operation at 605 nm is reported. The laser is made of a pure DNA host matrix doped with gain dyes. At high excitation densities, the emission of the untextured dye-doped DNA films is characterized by a broad emission peak with an overall line width of 12 nm and superimposed narrow peaks, characteristic of random lasing. ...

Lasing in the green from a distributed feedback (DFB) structure, based upon a second order grating fabricated by replica molding in a dye-doped UV curable polymer, has been demonstrated. For a Bragg grating having a periodicity and depth of 360 ± 2 nm and 78 ± 5 nm, respectively, a coumarin 540-polymer laser operates at 535.6 nm, which is in agreement with calculations of the photonic band diag...

Our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying sleep homeostasis is limited. We have taken a systematic approach to study neural signaling by the transmitter 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) in drosophila. We have generated knockout and knockin lines for Trh, the 5-HT synthesizing enzyme and all five 5-HT receptors, making it possible for us to determine their expression patterns and to inv...

This paper discusses system aspects and describes experimental demonstrations of nanosecond wavelength tuning in laser diode structures. Both tunable transmitters and tunable filters are considered. The dependence of the refractive index on the carrier density in semiconductors is exploited to obtain fast wavelength tuning. Experimentally, switching times of < 15 ns have been demonstrated in a ...

We demonstrate a significant reduction in the limit of label-free detection of individual viral-sized nanoparticles in aqueous solution through the use of a frequency doubled telecom laser constructed from a distributed feedback-periodically poled lithium-niobate (DFB-PPLN) union. By driving a whispering gallery mode biosensor near a wavelength of 650 nm with this device we have detected real-t...

Classifying textures is a problem that has been considered by many researchers. Many of the high performance methods are based on extracting features from the textures and performing classification in the feature space. In this paper, we consider the application of a new directional filter bank (DFB) to the problem of texture classification. The DFB is used to provide a compact and efficient re...

We perform a full numerical characterisation of half-open cavity random DFB Raman fibre laser amplifier schemes for WDM transmission in terms of signal power variation, noise and nonlinear impairments, showcasing the excellent potential of this scheme to provide amplification for DWDM transmission with very low gain variation.

− We propose ultra stable coherent laser sources based on optical injection locked single mode of the femtosecond fiber laser comb. The source is discretely tunable coherent optical sources by two DFB lasers, which are injection-locked to a respective single mode of the fiber laser comb with the frequency difference of 500 MHz, that is exactly twice of the comb repetition frequency.
