We describe a four-step sequence for the synthesis of complex 2-hydroxy-1-naphthoic acids involving Z-selective olefination of benzaldehyde derivatives with a novel dioxolenone-containing phenyl phosphonate reagent, followed by dioxolenone cleavage with alkaline trifluoroethanol and oxidative cyclization (Mn(OAc)(3)) of the resultant trifluoroethyl beta-keto esters. Abstract: Indolizyl-5-lithium anions react with succinic and phtalic anhidrides giving 1,4-keto acids, with oxallyl chloride giving 1,2-diketone, and with ethyl pyruvate giving 1,2-hydroxyacid. However, with α-halocarbonyl compounds, they react in different ways, forming the products of selective bromination at C-5 (with α-bromo ketones and esters of α-bromo acids) and 5-chloroacetyl indolizines.

A third strategy for cross-dehydrogenative coupling reaction has been reported via platinum-catalyzed sp(3) C-H and sp(3) C-H coupling reaction in the absence of oxidant. Nitroalkanes as well as dialkyl malonate derivatives, beta-keto esters and malononitrile are active participants in this coupling reaction. Both cyclic and acyclic non-activated simple ketones are good reactants in this reaction.

Acrylic esters, thioesters and N-acryloyl pyrrole have been identified as effective electrophiles in the enantioselective Michael addition reaction with beta-keto ester pro-nucleophiles catalysed by a cinchona alkaloid derived bifunctional organocatalyst; enantiomeric excesses of up to 98% and yields of up to 96% can be obtained for a range of Michael acceptors and pro-nucleophiles.
