The overproduction and secretion of inositol (i.e., Opi(-)) phenotype is associated with defects in regulation of phospholipid biosynthesis in yeast. Here we report a screen of the essential yeast gene set using a conditional-expression library. This screen identified novel functions previously unknown to affect phospholipid synthesis.

Adaptation to stress by eukaryotic pathogens is often accompanied by a transition in cellular morphology. The human fungal pathogen Cryptococcus neoformans is known to switch between the yeast and the filamentous form in response to amoebic predation or during mating. As in the classic dimorphic fungal pathogens, the morphotype is associated with the ability of cryptococci to infect various hos...

Utilizing a screening method designed for the identification of genes involved with enhanced protein secretion in Saccharomyces cerevisiae we identified a gene, which we named PSE-1 (Protein Secretion Enhancer). Overexpression of PSE-1 in a multi-copy plasmid, as shown by Northern hybridization, gave a fourfold enhancement in total protein secretion. The repertoire of proteins that are found to...

A 30-month-old male infant presented with sacrococcygeal and pre-sacral mass. Ultrasound (US) abdomen revealed a huge pre-sacral mass with irregular margins extending into the pelvis, pushing the rectum antero-laterally. CT scan and MRI confirmed the US findings. Serum alpha fetoprotein level was abnormally elevated. Histopathological examination of surgical-specimen suggested sacrococcygeal yo...

Several physiologically important proteins lack a classical secretory signal sequence, yet they are secreted from cells. To investigate the secretion mechanism of such proteins, a representative mammalian protein that is exported by a nonclassical mechanism, galectin-1, has been expressed in yeast. Galectin-1 is exported across the yeast plasma membrane, and this export does not require the cla...

The ability to trap, manipulate and release single cells on a surface is important both for fundamental studies of cellular processes and for the development of novel lab-on-chip miniaturized tools for biological and medical applications. In this paper we demonstrate how magnetic domain walls generated in micro- and nano-structures fabricated on a chip surface can be used to handle single yeast...

The formation and budding of endoplasmic reticulum ER-derived vesicles depends on the COPII coat protein complex that was first identified in yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The ER-associated Sec12 and the Sar1 GTPase initiate the COPII coat formation by recruiting the Sec23-Sec24 heterodimer following the subsequent recruitment of the Sec13-Sec31 heterotetramer. In yeast, there is usually one ...

One of the most important pest in the Oak forest of Kurdistan province is Oak leaf roller moth, Tortrix viridana L. (Lep.: Tortricidae). Use of pheromone trap is one of the suitable methods for monitoring and controlling of the pest. In this work, three main factors which affect the efficiency of traps including trap type, pheromone dose and installation height trap were studied. Four types of ...

Protein secretion is conferred by a hydrophobic secretion signal usually located at the N-terminal of the polypeptide. We report here, the identification of a novel secretion signal (SS) that is capable of directing the secretion of recombinant proteins from both prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Secretion of fusion reporter proteins was demonstrated in Escherichia coli, Saccharomyces cerevisiae and ...
