Schmallenberg virus was detected in cattle and sheep in northwestern Europe in 2011. To determine whether wild ruminants are also susceptible, we measured antibody seroprevalence in cervids (roe deer and red deer) in Belgium in 2010 and 2011. Findings indicated rapid spread among these deer since virus emergence ≈250 km away.

The facultative intracellular Gram-negative bacterium Brucella melitensis causes brucellosis in domestic and wild mammals, and it is a dominant pathogen responsible for human disease. This study reports the whole-genome sequencing of B. melitensis strain QY1, isolated from sheep suffering from abortion and arthritis in 2015 in Gansu, China.

Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) and bluetongue (BT) are two of the most devastating viral diseases affecting domestic wild ruminants. They cause significant economic losses, vaccination is important method for combating both FMD BT. Simultaneous vaccinations crucial animal welfare as well labor cost savings. No reports were found on simultaneous administration BT vaccines to sheep. This study eval...

In 2014-2016, >1,000 wild goats and sheep in 4 northern and central provinces of Iran died from peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV) infection. Partial nucleoprotein sequencing of PPRV from 3 animals showed a close relationship to lineage 4 strains from China. Control measures are needed to preserve vulnerable ruminant populations.

BACKGROUND AND AIM Animal chlamydiosis, caused by different chlamydial species, is characterized by clinical or subclinical disease manifestations in cattle, buffalo, ovine, caprine and wild animal species. Animal chlamydiosis often remains underdiagnosed or undiagnosed, and its status in many parts of India is still unknown. Hence, the present study was conducted to determine the seroprevalenc...

Cytoplasmic localization of the prion protein (PrP) has been observed in different species and cell types. We have investigated this poorly understood phenomenon by expressing fusion proteins of sheep prion protein and green fluorescent protein ((GFP)PrP) in N2a cells, with variable sequence context surrounding the start codon Met(1). (GFP)PrP expressed with the wild-type sequence was transport...

It is postulated that IFN-gamma confers susceptibility to immunologically mediated tissue injury. To test this hypothesis, we compared the intensity of accelerated anti-glomerular basement membrane glomerulonephritis between wild-type (IFN-gamma+/+) and IFN-gamma gene knockout (IFN-gamma-/-) mice. This disease model is initiated by binding of heterologous (sheep) anti-glomerular basement membra...

Recent outbreaks of Rift Valley fever in ruminant livestock, characterized by mass abortion and high mortality rates in neonates, have raised international interest in improving vaccine control strategies. Previously, we developed a reliable challenge model for sheep that improves the evaluation of existing and novel vaccines in sheep. This sheep model demonstrated differences in the pathogenes...
