We have observed high-contrast matter wave interference between 30 Bose-Einstein condensates with uncorrelated phases. Interferences were observed after the independent condensates were released from a one-dimensional optical lattice and allowed to overlap. This phenomenon is explained with a simple theoretical model, which generalizes the analysis of the interference of two condensates.

We discuss a simple beam interference approximation method for deriving the angular selectivity of diffraction in weakly modulated volume holographic gratings. The results obtained using the multiple beam interference model agree qualitatively with the results obtained from a physical optics treatment of the coupled-wave theory for volume holographic gratings. © 2009 American Association of Phy...

Wave-packet interference is investigated within the complex quantum Hamilton-Jacobi formalism using a hydrodynamic description. Quantum interference leads to the formation of the topological structure of quantum caves in space-time Argand plots. These caves consist of the vortical and stagnation tubes originating from the isosurfaces of the amplitude of the wave function and its first derivativ...

We propose a theoretical design for a compact photonic crystal (PC) polarization beam splitter (PBS) based on the multimode interference (MMI) effect. The size of a conventional MMI device designed by the self-imaging principle is not compact enough; therefore, we design a compact PC PBS based on the difference of the interference effect between TE and TM modes. Within the MMI coupler, the depe...

We propose a method to control electromagnetic (EM) radiations by holographic metasurfaces, including to producing multi-beam scanning in one dimension (1D) and two dimensions (2D) with the change of frequency. The metasurfaces are composed of subwavelength metallic patches on grounded dielectric substrate. We present a combined theory of holography and leaky wave to realize the multi-beam radi...

The shear wave velocity is one of a few important parameters that characterize the mechanical properties of bio-materials. In this paper, two noninvasive methods are proposed to measure the shear velocity by inspecting the shear wave interference patterns. In one method, two shear wave sources are placed on the opposite two sides of a sample, driven by the identical sinusoidal signals. The shea...

The purpose of this experiment was to observe the wave-particle duality of photons by demonstrating that single photons can and do interfere with themselves. This was accomplished through the use of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer and a Young double slit apparatus. The EMCCD camera used for both experiments can detect single photons to some degree, thus demonstrating the particle nature of photon...

While ray optics is a valid model for many multimode optical systems, it cannot capture diffraction and interference phenomena which may be required, for example, in calculating speckle propagation in multimode fiber. Wave optics includes the effect of interference and diffraction, but it is usually much more costly computationally. We show how to bridge the gap between ray and wave optics by u...

Utilizing the interference of wave fronts of two opposing lenses, 4Pi-confocal and I(5)M microscopy improve the axial resolution of far-field fluorescence microscopy as much as threefold to sevenfold. However, establishing the phase difference of the wave fronts in the sample is a problem yet to be solved. Here we show that the phase difference is encoded in the microscope's transfer of the spa...

The present paper reports on the detailed studies concerning the neutron spin interference visibility observed after transmitting through multilayer magnetic resonators in a spin echo condition with very cold neutrons from a high flux reactor. The observed visibility of the interference between upward and downward spin components perpendicular to the Larmor precession plane of the neutron spin ...
