Solid waste management is a challenge for the cities' authorities in developing countries mainly due to the increasing generation of waste, the burden posed on the municipal budget as a result of the high costs associated to its management, the lack of understanding over a diversity of factors that affect the different stages of waste management and linkages necessary to enable the entire handl...

The abysmal state of and challenges in municipal solid waste management (MSWM) in urban India is the motivation of the present study. Urbanization contributes enhanced municipal solid waste (MSW) generation and unscientific handling of MSW degrades the urban environment and causes health hazards. In this paper, an attempt is made to evaluate the major parameters of MSWM, in addition to a compre...

Incineration has been employed since about 1874 [6] as a method of solid waste treatment and disposal. The first incinerators were constructed in England to burn "mixed refuse" and the combustion process was initially called either "destruction" or "cremation". A prime consideration in the early development of refuse incinerators was that the heat released could be recovered for steam productio...

The current status of landfill disposal of hazardous wastes in the United States is indicated by presenting descriptions of six operating landfills. These landfills illustrate the variety of techniques that exist in landfill disposal of hazardous wastes. Although some landfills more effectively isolate hazardous waste than others, all landfills must deal with the following problems. Leachate fr...

In this paper we compare two high-profile strategic policy reviews undertaken for the UK government on environmental risks: radioactive waste management and climate change. These reviews took very different forms, both in terms of analytic approach and deliberation strategy. The Stern Review on the Economics of Climate Change was largely an exercise in expert modelling, building, within a cost-...

Introduction: Bio-medical wastes are of great importance due to its potential environmental hazards and health problems. The waste produced in the course of health care activities carries a higher potential for infection and injury than any other type of waste. It is estimated that annually 0.33 million tons of hospital waste is generated in India. The objective of this study is to analyze the ...

INTRODUCTION In the past decade, we studied occupational bioaerosol exposures in various sites of the waste management chain. In this paper we present an overview of exposure levels of inhalable dust, endotoxin, beta(1-->3)-glucan (known or probable inducers of airways inflammation), and extracellular polysaccharide antigens of Aspergillus and Penicillium species (EPS-Pen/Asp; a common and prob...

The changes which occur in renal excretory function during pregnancy are discussed. The relationship between glomerular filtration rate and effective renal plasma flow is examined in the light of new serial data obtained under conditions of saline diuresis. Changes in the renal handling of nutrients and in the excretion of waste products during pregnancy are reviewed.

An automated system is described for the sensor-based precision docking and manipulation of large objects. Past work in the remote handling of large nuclear waste containers is extensible to the problems associated with the handling of large objects such as coils of flat steel in industry. Computer vision and ultrasonic proximity sensing as described here are used to control the precision docki...

We report a case of infectious endocarditis attributable to Legionella longbeachae. L. longbeachae is usually associated with lung infections. It is commonly found in composted waste wood products. L. longbeachae should be regarded as an agent of infectious endocarditis, notably in the context of gardening involving handling of potting soils.
