We have cloned a 4.9-kilobase (kb) HincII fragment which contains a tetracycline resistance determinant (tetM) from the chromosome of Ureaplasma urealyticum. The 4.9-kb HincII fragment contains DNA in addition to the structural gene, is closely related to the previously characterized 5.0-kb fragment from pJI3, and contains no normal ureaplasmal DNA sequences.
Recent work on the Molicutes that associate with genital tract tissues focuses on four species that may be of interest in potential maternal, fetal, and neonatal infection and in contributing to adverse pregnancy outcomes. Mycoplasma hominis and Ureaplasma urealyticum have historically been the subject of attention, but Mycoplasma genitalis which causes male urethritis in addition to colonizing...
BACKGROUND Our goals were to describe azithromycin (AZI) pharmacokinetics in maternal plasma (MP), fetal plasma (FP), and amniotic fluid (AF) following intra-amniotic infection (IAI) with Ureaplasma in pregnant rhesus monkeys and to explore concentration-response relationships. METHODS Following intra-amniotic inoculation of Ureaplasma parvum, rhesus monkeys received AZI (12.5 mg/kg every 12 ...
The cervicovaginal and endometrial isolation rates of Ureaplasma urealyticum and Mycoplasma hominis and relevant demographic data were obtained at the time of laparoscopy in 193 women from infertile marriage. For comparative purposes, fertile women undergoing laparoscopy for tubal ligation (n = 56) or other purposes (n = 64) were also cultured. Blacks were more likely than caucasians to be infe...
Lipoglycans from mycoplasmas possess the ability to induce the elaboration of procoagulant activity. This represents a third endotoxic property for these polymers, in addition to the pyrogenicity and clotting of Limulus lysate reported previously. Lipoglycans from three species of Acholeplasma (A. axanthum, A. granularum, and A. oculi) stimulated the elaboration in vitro of procoagulant activit...
A modification of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was developed for the serological characterisation and identification of strains of Ureaplasma urealyticum. The eight recognised human serotypes of U urealyticum and antisera produced against them were used as reference for the evaluation and standardisation of the method. The serological profile illustrating reactions of antigen with ...
Four agar media (PPLO, NYC, A7B, and E) which are commonly used for the isolation of urogenital tract Mycoplasma species and Ureaplasma urealyticum were compared by culturing swabs of the endocervix of 334 pregnant women on all four media. To permit growth of both Mycoplasma and U. urealyticum, selective ingredients were omitted from the media tested. A7B and E agar were both satisfactory for t...
Pre-term birth (PTB) associated with intrauterine infection and inflammation (IUI) is the major cause of early PTB less than 32 weeks of gestation. Ureaplasma spp. are common commensals of the urogenital tract in pregnancy and are the most commonly identified microorganisms in amniotic fluid of pre-term pregnancies. While we have an understanding of the causal relationship between intra-amnioti...
Resulta vital identificarlas tratarlas adecuadame...
