We estimate the power spectrum of HI intensity fluctuations for a sample of 8 galaxies (7 dwarf and one spiral). The power spectrum can be fitted to a power law PHI(U) = AU α for 6 of these galaxies, indicating turbulence is operational. The estimated best fit value for the slope ranges from ∼ −1.5 (AND IV, NGC 628, UGC 4459 and GR 8) to ∼ −2.6 (DDO 210 and NGC 3741). We interpret this bi-modal...

Glutamate is an indispensable neurotransmitter, triggering postsynaptic signals upon recognition by postsynaptic receptors. We questioned the phylogenetic position and the molecular details of when and where glutamate recognition arose in the glutamate-gated chloride channels. Experiments revealed that glutamate recognition requires an arginine residue in the base of the binding site, which ori...

[1] The sculpture of valleys by flowing water is widely recognized, and simplified models of incision by this process (e.g., the stream power law) are the basis for most recent landscape evolution models. Under steady state conditions a stream power law predicts that channel slope varies as an inverse power law of drainage area. Using both contour maps and laser altimetry, we find that this inv...

1. introduction nowadays, population increase, progress in science and technology and development of industrial installations with the shortage of places in metropolitan areas have made considerable changes in the morphology of watersheds. violation to territory of rivers, channels, and streams causes alterations in natural drainage pattern and overflowing due to the lower capacity of the chang...

The Haw River, a high order river in the southeastern United States, is characterized by severe bank erosion and geomorphic change from historical conditions of clear waters and connected floodplains. In 2014 it was named one of the 10 most threatened rivers in the United States by American Rivers. Like many developed areas, the region has a history of disturbance including extensive upland soi...

We live in an age of ‘selfies’. Yet, how we look at our own faces has seldom been systematically investigated. In this study we test if visual processing of self-faces is different from other faces, using psychophysics and eye-tracking. Specifically, the association between the psychophysical properties of self-face representation and visual processing strategies involved in self-face recogniti...

Urban flooding is an increasing problem in developing countries, thus understanding flood dynamics is necessary to establish guidelines on urban development and flood management. This paper studied the lower reaches of the Andalien River basin, situated on the coast of the Greater Concepcion Metropolitan Area (CMA), the second most urbanized area in Chile. This basin experienced a record 21 flo...

The effect of sloping boundaries on thermal convection is studied theoretically and experimentally in the context of a model in which fluid is contained in a differentially heated rectangular box of small aspect ratio (depth/length), inclined at an angle 8 to the vertical. Like its two limiting cases, Benard convection and convection in the vertical slot, there is a steady laminar twodimensiona...

Avalanches, debris flows and other types of gravity-driven granular flows are a common hazard in mountainous regions. These regions often have human settlements in the lower parts of valleys, with human structures dangerously exposed to the destructive effects of these geophysical flows. Therefore a scientific effort has been made to understand, model and simulate geophysical granular flows. In...

The Nandongzi landslide occurred in the Yanshan region of North China. From 2017, slope has been significantly deformed after several excavations. Field investigations show that is a special toppling deposit does not have basic conditions. deformation mechanism become difficult issue for engineers, attracting attention scientists. Joint, surface, and borehole lithology surveys revealed surface ...
