We study the localization of Rayleigh waves propagating in a semi-infinite and isotropic medium with inhomogeneities that are modeled as rods parallel to the incoming wave front and are distributed randomly up to a maximum depth. For a perfectly smooth surface, the localization length of a Rayleigh wave is predicted to reach a minimum at intermediate wavelength l and to diverge for both low and...
We present a novel eikonal tomography approach using physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) for Rayleigh wave phase velocities based on the equation. The PINN (pinnET) network utilizes deep as universal function approximators and extracts traveltimes of medium during optimization process. Whereas classical uses generic non-physics interpolation regularization step to reconstruct traveltime su...
Coherent diffractive imaging (CDI) is an imaging technique that seeks to restore the exit-surface wave from intensity measurements, either in the far field diffraction plane or the Fresnel diffraction region. To date numerous strategies have been proposed to complete this restoration, the most successful being the original scheme proposed by Gerchberg and Saxton and its subsequent modifications...
We study the boundary controllability problem for a multilayer Rao-Nakra sandwich beam. This beam model consists of a Rayleigh beam coupled with a number of wave equations. We consider all combinations of clamped and hinged boundary conditions with the control applied to either the moment or the rotation angle at an end of the beam. We prove that exact controllability holds provided the damping...
The problem of oblique wave scattering of a Rayleigh wave by a cylindrical cavity in an elastic half-space is solved using the multipole expansion method. Whereas in the analogous water-wave problem a single scalar field is expressed as an infinite multipole expansion, and in the Rayleigh wave case with normal incidence two scalar fields suffice, here we require three coupled scalar multipole e...
We have performed atomic simulations of crack propagation along a weak interface joining two harmonic crystals. The simulations show that a mode II shear dominated crack can accelerate to the Rayleigh wave speed and then nucleate an intersonic daughter that travels at the longitudinal wave speed. This contradicts the general belief that a crack can travel no faster than the Rayleigh speed.
This paper explores the possibility and extent of non-uniqueness in the acoustic-to-articulatory inversion of speech, from a statistical point of view. It proposes a technique to estimate the non-uniqueness, based on finding peaks in the conditional probability function of the articulatory space. The paper corroborates the existence of non-uniqueness in a statistical sense, especially in stop c...
this paper presents results of applying a new approach on 2d inversion of magnetotelluric (mt) data in order to enhance resolution and stability of the inversion results. due to non-linearity and limited coverage of data acquisition in an mt field campaign, minimizing the error by linearization of the problem in least squares inversion usually leads to an ill-posed problem. in general, an inver...
