The ectodermal dysplasias represent a group of inherited disorders characterized by defects in tissues that are derived from ectoderm. Freire-Maia and Pinheiro describe more than 100 different taxonomic groupings of ectodermal dysplasia across a wide spectrum of clinical presentation. The classic form of ectodermal dysplasia (Christ-Siemens-Touraine syndrome) is thought to be X-linked and invol...
Two RecA orthologs, Rad51 and Dmc1, mediate homologous recombination in meiotic cells. During budding yeast meiosis, Hed1 coordinates the actions of Rad51 and Dmc1 by down-regulating Rad51 activity. It is thought that Hed1-dependent attenuation of Rad51 facilitates formation of crossovers that are necessary for the correct segregation of chromosomes at the first meiotic division. We purified He...
Florid cemento-osseous dysplasia (FCOD) has been described as a condition that characteristically affects the jaws of middle-aged black women. It usually exhibits as multiple radiopaque cemetum-like masses distributed throughout the jaws. Radiographically, FCOD appears as dense, lobulated masses, often symmetrically located in various regions of the jaws. Computed tomography, because of its abi...
Hypodontia and associated conditions like Hereditary Ectodermal Dysplasia (HED) and microdontia markedly influence on physical, functional and psychosocial maturation of the affected individuals. Thorough evaluation, proper counseling and careful treatment planning employing a multidisciplinary approach are keys to a successful, long-term management. This case report describes the prosthodontic...
We reanalyze data of HEAO1/A2 – Cosmic X-ray Experiment – in order to repeat the measurements of cosmic X-ray background (CXB) flux and accurately compare this value with other measurements of the CXB. We used the data of MED, HED1 and HED3 detectors in scan mode, that allowed us to measure effective solid angles and effective areas of detectors self consistently, in the same mode as the CXB fl...
Hypohydrotic ectodermal dysplasia is a hereditary disorder, which affects ectodermal derivatives. It manifests several abnormalities of the teeth, and is commonly inherited through female carriers. This case report presents a patient with compromised esthetics and function. A multidisciplinary approach was planned involving an oral pathologist, endodontist, orthodontist and a prosthodontist.
