Control of the longitudinal profile of ablated structures during laser processing is a key technological requirement. We report here on the direct machining of trenches in silicon with circular profiles using femtosecond accelerating beams. We describe the ablation process based on an intensity threshold model, and show how the depth of the trenches can be predicted in the framework of a causti...

Twenty-one women subjects were matched in terms of their Vo2max and assigned to one of two groups: (1) training at 30 s; or (2) 2 min with a 1:1 work: relief ratio (1:1 WR) before participating in a 7-week training programme which began at an intensity of 85% Vo2max and increased 5% every two weeks (90% and 95% Vo2max). The subjects trained to exhaustion four times per week. Maximal oxygen cons...

This paper is a selective review of the development of the threshold model in time series analysis over the past 30 years or so. First, it re-visits the motivation of the model. Next, it describes the various expressions of the model, highlighting the principle underlying them and the main probabilistic and statistical properties. Finally, after listing some of the recent offsprings of the thre...

Introduction: Wind erosion is a phenomenon that causes severe environmental changes in arid and semi-arid climates. As surface soil texture is very effective in soil erodibility, identifying soil erodibility index is important and efficient. Mismanagement greatly contributes to the development of wind erosion. The velocity that makes the first particles of soil move from the surface is called t...

The presence of non-simultaneous maskers can result in strong impairment in auditory intensity resolution relative to a condition without maskers, and causes a complex pattern of effects that is difficult to explain on the basis of peripheral processing. We suggest that the failure of selective attention to the target tones is a useful framework for understanding these effects. Two experiments ...

A very simple definition of Ising dusters was introduced by Rieger which joins spins with an average individual magnetization opposite to the global magnetization. Involving percolation methods we get very good agreements between the critical temperatures and the percolation thresholds of diluted and undiluted Ising systems in various dimensions.

Widely varying estimates of the number of discernible object colors have been made by using various methods over the past 100 years. To clarify the source of the discrepancies in the previous, inconsistent estimates, the number of discernible object colors is estimated over a wide range of color temperatures and illuminance levels using several chromatic adaptation models, color spaces, and col...

This study investigated the changes in cardiorespiratory response and running performance of 9 male "Talent Identification" (TID) and 6 male Senior Elite (SE) Spanish National Squad triathletes during a specific cycle-run (C-R) test. The TID and SE triathletes (initial age 15.2 ± 0.7 vs. 23.8 ± 5.6 years, p = 0.03; V(O2)max 77.0 ± 5.6 vs. 77.8 ± 3.6 ml · kg(-1) · min(-1), nonsignificant) underw...

The adaptable lymphocyte hypothesis is identified as a possible source of inspiration for artificial immune systems. Based on a number of qualitative investigations we identify some properties of a theoretical system (the tunable activation threshold model and excitability) that could be applicable in an engineering domain. An example is shown of how we could exploit these properties.
