The Operations Technology Center (OTC) is responsible for the systems used to manage and maintain the AT&T long distance network. In this paper we describe an effort within the OTC to improve the maintainability of AT&T’s 4ESS switches, by optimizing the thresholding rules within the operation support system responsible for maintaining these switches. This optimization task required us to firs...

The long-term goal of this project is to understand the patterns and timing of latest Pleistocene sedimentation in the Geoclutter area of the NJ margin. Paleoenvironmental reconstructions of the study area were developed using benthic foraminifera and sediment texture analyses of drill cores obtained in Fall 2002 using the ACHC-800 from the RV Knorr. This award was extended through October 31, ...

TRADING IN FX MARKETS IS DOMINATED BY TWO MICROSTRUCTURES: exchanges with market makers and OTC-markets without market makers. Using laboratory experiments we test whether the impact of a Tobin tax is different in these two market microstructures. We find that (i) in markets without market makers an unilaterally imposed Tobin tax (i.e. a tax haven exists) increases volatility. (ii) In contrast,...

Many of today’s embedded systems, such as sensor networks, have extremely tight constraints on energy and area, rely on wireless communication to together solve a given task. This paper shows that, for many cooperative embedded systems, it is beneficial to trade communication with computation and compress data before it is transmitted over the air. In order to better understand the impact of co...

In this paper, a power-efficient scheme for embedded systems with wireless communication applications is proposed to reduce the power consumption of the overall system. Any transmission related module is required to be on only when the transmission is active and reliable to reduce power dissipation. The proposed method is based on the use of the extreme channel condition detector that is design...

The paper by Alexandra Heath, Gerard Kelly and Mark Manning does an excellent job of extending existing models of the effects of requiring use of CCPs for OTC derivatives on counterparty risk and implications for collateral demand. The innovations include: first, considering a particular market structure where there are core institutions in the OTC markets that also trade with and provide servi...

We examine the announcement period stock returns for 179 over-the-counter (OTC) firms that issue common stock to reduce nonconvertible debt. We find that small OTC firms experience returns that are significantly more negative than large OTC firms. Regression tests reveal that firm size is a significant factor in accounting for stock returns. Other tests establish firm size as a dominant effect....

The paper presents a new energy shaping control design for a class of underactuated Euler-Lagrange systems. Flexible joint robots, Series Elastic Actuators, and Variable Impedance Actuated Robots Albu-Schäffer et al. [2008] belong for example to this class. First, classical PD control with feed-forward compensation is revisited and a novel, straight-forward and general formulation for the stabi...

The main goal of Transport Channel Synchronization is that frames sent by the RNC arrive in time to the Nodes B for transmission over the air interface. The 3GPP specifies a simple Timing Adjustment algorithm that tracks the delay of the Iub link (interface defined between RNC and Node B) by adding or subtracting a constant step. We show that this scheme reacts too slowly under abrupt delay var...
