Point imaging by a photonic crystal slab due to the negative refraction is studied theoretically. By investigating the transfer function of the imaging system, the influence of the surface termination to the imaging quality is analyzed. It is shown that an appropriate surface termination is important for obtaining an image of good quality. ∗Electronic address: [email protected]

A new kind of metamaterial, an array of periodic gold rod pairs standing on gold substrate, is introduced in this paper. A commercial electromagnetic mode solver, the High-Frequency Structure Simulator, is employed to explore the propagation property of electromagnetic waves in this system. When an S -polarized electromagnetic (EM) wave propagates along the substrate surface, strong magnetic re...

Ultrathin (submicrometer) organic films of specified index of refraction are constructed by the sequential deposition of self-assembled zirconium phosphonate (ZP) molecular monolayers that contain two Merent bisphosphonate ions, 1,lO-decanediylbis(phosphonate) (DBP) and 4,4azobis[(p-phenylene)methylenelbis(phosphonate) (AZO). By varying the ratio of DBP to AZO monolayers in the ZP multilayer fi...

Maxwell Garnett effective medium theory is used to study the influence of silver nanoparticle induced field enhancement on the nonlinear response of a Kerr-type nonlinear host. We show that the composite nonlinear absorption coefficient, beta(c), can be enhanced relative to the host nonlinear absorption coefficient near the surface plasmon resonance of silver nanoparticles. This enhancement is ...

We report on the first experimental evidence of negative refraction of surface acoustic waves, through a prism-shaped 2D phononic crystal having a solid matrix. The sample is constituted by a periodic array of air holes drilled in a Si substrate. The experiments are performed using a laser-ultrasonic technique.

In computer graphics, it is often an advantage to calculate refractions directly, especially when the application is time-critical or when line graphics have to be displayed. We specify efficient formulas and parametric equations for the refraction on straight lines and planes. Furthermore, we develop a general theory of refractions, with reflections as a special case. In the plane case, all re...

In this work, we have experimentally and theoretically studied negative refraction of electromagnetic waves by a metallodielectric photonic crystal. We showed that by adding a periodic dielectric perturbation to the unit cell of a metallic photonic crystal, it is possible to increase the range of incidence angles at which the electromagnetic waves are negatively refracted. We obtained negative ...

The theory and practice of refraction interferometry is presented. We show that the crosscorrelation between a nearby pair of refraction traces yields a head wave event kinematically equivalent to one generated by a source at position x along the refractor. This redatumed source location x is independent of the surface source location, so that all head waves arrive at the same time in a redatum...

In this Letter, we introduce a simple metal waveguide array for realizing all-angle wide frequency bandwidth negative refraction from the visible to infrared frequencies. Theoretical analysis from the rigorous coupled-wave theory reveals that the negative coupling constant resulting from the anomalous coupling of guided surface plasmon polariton modes contributes to the negative refraction. The...

Has the ten-year old quest for the optical superlens, based on Veselago’s hypothesis of negative refraction, been a chimera? We argue that Pendry’s alternative prescription of the silver superlens is nothing more than an application of the natural phenomenon of surface plasmon resonance that occurs in the noble metal films. This phenomenon does not predict the reality of Veselago’s negative ref...
