Dosage studies and the inheritance pattern of the gene for steroid sulfatase (Sts) in the mouse have previously provided indirect evidence for a functional Y-linked allele which recombines obligatorily with its X-linked allele in male meiosis. In this study, we have investigated the linkage relationship of Sts and the sex-reversed mutation (Sxr), a gene which is known to reside in the pairing r...

This paper reports the description and performance of our system, FBK-HLT, participating in the SemEval 2015, Task #2 “Semantic Textual Similarity”, English subtask. We submitted three runs with different hypothesis in combining typical features (lexical similarity, string similarity, word n-grams, etc) with syntactic structure features, resulting in different sets of features. The results eval...

It is well known that the nonblocking supervisory control problem is NP-hard, subject in particular to state space explosion that is exponential in the number of system components. In this paper we propose to manage complexity by organizing the system as a State Tree Structure (STS). STS are an adaptation of state charts to supervisory control theory. Based on STS we present an efficient recurs...

Body-fixed motion sensors have been applied for the assessment of sit-to-stand (STS) performance. However, the accuracy and concurrent validity of sensor-based estimations of the body's center of mass (CoM) motion during STS are unclear. Therefore, this study investigated the accuracy and concurrent validity of sensor-based measures of CoM motion during STS in older adults. Accuracy and concurr...

Platinum-based chemotherapeutic agents, such as carboplatin and cisplatin, are effective against many human tumors, but their use may be limited by a high incidence of ototoxicity. Delayed administration of the chemoprotective agent sodium thiosulfate (STS) reduces the ototoxicity of carboplatin in a guinea-pig model, when given up to 8 h after the chemotherapy, and also reduces hearing loss in...

Multilocus sequence typing of 169 non-O157 enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) isolated from patients with hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) demonstrated 29 different sequence types (STs); 78.1% of these strains clustered in 5 STs. From all STs and serotypes identified, we established a reference panel of EHEC associated with HUS (HUSEC collection).

We have synthesized and evaluated two self-immobilizing, turn-on fluorescent probes carrying a coumarin molecular framework for imaging intracellular human steroid sulfatase (STS) activity. The 8-fluoromethyl coumarin derivative, which gives stronger fluorescence response in the incubation study with STS preparations, was successfully applied to visualize STS activity in cells.

An important tool in the analysis of genomic sequences is the physical map. In this paper we examine the construction of physical maps from hybridization data between STS (sequence tag sites) probes and clones of genomic fragments. An algorithmic theory of the mapping process, a proposed performance evaluation procedure, and several new algorithmic strategies for mapping are given. A unifying t...

Children use information from both the auditory and visual modalities to aid in understanding speech. A dramatic illustration of this multisensory integration is the McGurk effect, an illusion in which an auditory syllable is perceived differently when it is paired with an incongruent mouth movement. However, there are significant interindividual differences in McGurk perception: some children ...
