Isolated fractures of the first rib are extremely rare and are more commonly associated with either multiple rib fractures or life threatening injuries. First rib fractures are commonly caused by direct trauma, violent muscular contraction or by chronic stress. We present a case of isolated first rib fracture in a young healthy patient, where the mechanism of injury appears to be indirect trauma.

Bisphosphonates (BPs) and denosumab reduce the risk of spine and nonspine fractures. Atypical femur fractures (AFFs) located in the subtrochanteric region and diaphysis of the femur have been reported in patients taking BPs and in patients on denosumab, but they also occur in patients with no exposure to these drugs. In this report, we review studies on the epidemiology, pathogenesis, and medic...

The technology of multiple hydraulic fracture stimulation in horizontal wells has trans‐ formed the business of oil and gas exploitation from extremely tight, unconventional hydro‐ carbon bearing rock formations. The fracture stimulation process typically involves placing multiple fractures stage-by-stage along the horizontal well using diverse well completion technologies. The effective design...

BACKGROUND The problem of atypical fractures, such as subtrochanteric or diaphyseal femoral fractures, associated with long-term treatment with bisphosphonates (BPs) has recently been given increasingly more attention. These fractures develop as stress fractures and are characterised by diaphyseal cortical thickening and a transverse or slightly oblique fracture line. The use of bisphosphonates...

Supination-external rotation (SER) fractures of the ankle may present with a medial ligamentous injury that is not apparent on the initial radiographs. A cadaver gravity-stress view has been described, but the manual-stress view is considered to be the examination of choice for the diagnosis of medial injuries. We prospectively compared the efficacy of these two examinations. We undertook both ...

SUBTROCHANTERIC fractures of the femur are difficult to treat successfully. Fractures in this region show typical displacement. The strong gluteal muscles abduct the proximal fragment, whereas the adductors inserted below the fracture site adduct the distal fragment-see Figure 1. Biomechanical analysis of stress in the femur shows a high concentration of stress in the subtrochanteric region. Al...

Insufficiency fractures are a subtype of stress fractures which occur when normal or physiological stresses are placed on weakened bone. The main predisposing cause is osteoporosis. The clinical and radiological features of two elderly women with pelvic insufficiency fractures are described. Isotope bone scan is the most sensitive imaging modality for the detection of these fractures. Computed ...

BACKGROUND Stress fractures are classified as insufficiency and fatigue fractures. Insufficiency fractures occur when normal stresses are placed on bone with decreased mineralization and elastic resistance; whereas fatigue fractures occur when abnormal forces are applied to normal bone. CASE PRESENTATION We report a case of postpartum bilateral sacral fracture in the absence of documented ost...

INTRODUCTION Stress fractures are common during military training but femoral neck stress fractures are uncommon and sometimes pose diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. An incomplete stress fracture with excellent prognosis, if left unprotected, can lead to displaced femoral neck fracture with almost 63% complication rate even with best of the treatment. The aim of this study was to analyze v...
