meal of which oatmeal gruel is the old standard one. It has however certain disadvantages : it takes considerable time to prepare the meal; the patient finds it inconvenient to swallow with a tube in the mouth; a pint of gruel causes much dilution of the gastric juice at least in the first hour; and at times difficulty is experienced in drawing the thick samples through the tube. More recently,...

Aspirin administration to normal subjects resulted in a reduction in gastric prostaglandin E (PGE) output. Both PGE concentration and gastric juice volume were decreased. Gastric acid output also decreased, although the difference was not statistically significant. An increased sensitivity of the PGE system to inhibition by aspirin at 11 p.m., midnight, and 1am was observed.

1. The electrolytes were measured in alkaline gastric juice from eleven subjects with various gastric disorders; seven of these subjects had histamine-fast anacidity. The aim was to investigate the relation between alkaline gastric aspirates and the alkaline component predicted by the two-component hypothesis of gastric secretion. 2. The electrolyte concentrations Wered from one subject to anot...

A highly sensitive and simple voltammetric method is proposed for the determination of N-nitrosoatenolol (NA) and N-nitrosopropranolol (NP) in simulated gastric juice. The method is based on measuring the differential-pulse polarographic peak produced by NA and NP in Britton-Robinson buffers of pH 3 and 4 for NA and NP, respectively. Both compounds yielded diffusion-controlled current with diff...

Human basal gastric secretion is markedly reduced after oral administration of 10 mg diazepam. This effect lasts for five hours.Gastric nocturnal secretion, collected five hours after the last meal, reveals a decline towards the morning hours with an average of 25% in placebo-treated patients. A comparison between placebo and diazepam reveals a significantly greater decrease of 47% in volume af...

An established method for the assay of total bile acids was validated for use in fasting and post-prandial gastric juice samples. Fasting and post-prandial intragastric bile acid concentrations were measured in 29 healthy volunteers, 15 patients after vagotomy and gastrojejunostomy (V and GJ) and 15 patients after vagotomy and pyloroplasty (V and P). Healthy female volunteers had higher post-pr...

in 50 subjects with a modification that allowed the completeness of recovery of the maximal gastric secretion to be assessed. The effects of the exact position of the tube and the position of the subject on the completeness of recovery were investigated. A simple water-recovery test was found to be as reliable as fluoroscopy for showing that the tip of the tube was within the stomach. Provided ...

A second commercially prepared secretin has been found to inhibit the acid secreted by Heidenhain pouches in dogs in response to a meal but not to histamine. This inhibition is not affected by pancreatectomy.

Though elevated to the dignity of book-form this reprint of Dr. Hare's address to the Metropolitan Counties Branch of the British Medical Association would, in respect of quantity, more fittingly have been issued as a brochure. But, voluminous though it be not, it yet affords food for reflection upon the mutability of fashion in medical treatment. Dr. Hare's experience and knowledge are extensi...
