Neonates are susceptible to numerous infections. Factors that predispose these patients to nosocomial infections include very low birth weight, small size for gestational age, immunologic immaturity, and exposure to invasive procedures, including insertion of intravascular catheters and assisted ventilation. Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is an opportunistic, gram-negative aerobic bacillus with a...
BACKGROUND Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is a gram-negative bacillus that has become increasingly recognized as an important nosocomial pathogen, particularly in individuals with severe debilitation or immunosuppression. S. maltophilia is also characterized by its resistance to multiple antibiotics. S maltophilia peritonitis in CAPD (continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis) patients is associa...
Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is an emerging multidrug-resistant global opportunistic pathogen. The increasing incidence of nosocomial and community-acquired S. maltophilia infections is of particular concern for immunocompromised individuals, as this bacterial pathogen is associated with a significant fatality/case ratio. S. maltophilia is an environmental bacterium found in aqueous habitats, i...
Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is a Gram-negative pathogen with emerging nosocomial incidence [1]. It has been associated with several clinical syndromes, primarily in relation to the opportunistic infection of immunocompromised patients. Although not an inherently virulent pathogen, its ability to colonise respiratory-tract epithelial cells and medical-device surfaces makes it a ready coloniser ...
The antimicrobial activities of tigecycline (GAR-936) were compared with those of other agents against 1,087 strains recently isolated in 12 Spanish medical centers. Tigecycline showed activity against a wide spectrum of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, including strains such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, coagulase-negative staphylococci, penicillin-resistant Streptococcus pneu...
Draft genome sequences of oyster-associated Pseudomonas stutzeri strain MF28, P. alcaligenes strain OT69, P. aeruginosa strain WC55, Stenotrophomonas maltophilia strain MF89, and Microbacterium maritypicum strain MF109 are reported. Genome-wide surveys of these isolates suggest that the oyster microbiome, which remains largely understudied, has a strong potential to degrade crude oil.
Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, a multi drug resistant non fermenting Gram negative bacillus is an increasingly common nosocomial pathogen, especially in intensive care units. Comparatively few cases of infection have been reported in neonatal population. We present two cases of early onset neonatal sepsis due to S.maltophilia and a brief review of documented isolation in neonates.

After a case of peritonitis caused by Pseudomonas maltophilia had occurred 20 strains of the organism were investigated and the minimum inhibitory concentrations of a variety of antibiotics determined at 30 degrees C and 37 degrees C. There was a significant difference in susceptibility between 30 degrees C (most resistant) and 37 degrees C (most susceptible) for aminoglycosides and polymyxin B...
An argument has been raised from various perspectives against the Modern Synthesis (MS) in the past two decades: it has forgotten organisms. Niche construction theorists (Odling-Smee et al. 2003), developmental biologists like West-Eberhard (2003) and Evo-Devo elaborated various views which concur on a rehabilitation of the explanatory role of organisms, formerly neglected by an evolutionary sc...
