The time-kill effect of moxifloxacin on 20 genetically distinct isolates of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia resistant to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole was studied. The majority (80%) were killed by a concentration equivalent to four times the MIC; the MIC induced a transient decrease in bacterial counts at 4 h, followed by regrowth. No effect was detected in four isolates. These results merit furt...
Stenotrophomonas maltophilia bacteriophage DLP5 is a temperate phage with Siphoviridae family morphotype. DLP5 (vB_SmaS_DLP_5) is the first S. maltophilia phage shown to exist as a phagemid. The DLP5 genome is 96,542 bp, encoding 149 open reading frames (ORFs), including four tRNAs. Genomic characterization reveals moron genes potentially involved in host cell membrane modification.
The succession and growth strategy of a spring microbial community under earthquake action were investigated. The majority of pre-earthquake isolates belonged to the Gammaproteobacteria, including two numerically dominant Stenotrophomonas sp. RB25 and Acinetobacter sp. RB11 (r-strategists). The predominant post-earthquake isolates were Alphaproteobacteria, with Rhizobium sp. RA42 (K-strategists...
Microcystin-LR (MC-LR) and microcystin-RR (MC-RR) produced by harmful cyanobacterial blooms (HCBs) pose substantial threats to the ecosystem and public health due to their potential hepatotoxicity. Degradation of microcystins (MCs) by indigenous bacteria represents a promising method for removing MCs from fresh water without harming the aquatic environment, but only a few microcystin (MC)-degra...
Stenotrophomonas sp. strain WZN-1, isolated from an e-waste recycling area in Tianjin, China, is capable of degrading polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). The complete genome of strain WZN-1 consists of 4,512,703 bp. This genome information will provide important information about the biodegradation pathways and mechanisms of PBDEs.
Induction of L1 and L2 -Lactamases of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia Rouh-Mei Hu, Kuang-Jay Huang, Lii-Tzu Wu, Ying-Ju Hsiao, and Tsuey-Ching Yang* Department of Biotechnology and Bioinformatics, Asia University, Taichung 413, Taiwan; Department of Microbiology, China Medical University, Taichung 404, Taiwan; and Department of Medical Laboratory Science and Biotechnology, China Medical University...
A systematic evaluation of the attributable mortality of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia bacteremia was undertaken in a matched, retrospective, case-control study. We determined the attributable mortality rate (26.7%) and mortality risk ratio (an 8-fold increase) of S. maltophilia bacteremia. The attributable mortality rate for S. maltophilia bacteremia is similar to the attributable mortality rat...
The study was to determine the efficacy of copper-silver ionization against the formation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, and Acinetobacter baumannii in biofilms and planktonic phases. At concentrations below the EPA limits, ionization has potential to control the three waterborne pathogens, in addition to Legionella, in hospital water systems for nosocomial infection c...
We describe the first known case of pneumonia caused by a mucoid Stenotrophomonas maltophilia (Xanthomonas maltophilia) strain in a patient with bronchiectasis. The patient was admitted because of mild hemoptysis and productive cough with infiltrative shadow in the right lower lung field on chest X ray. The clinical symptoms were mild, and treatment with minocycline was effective.
Biofilm formation depends on several factors. The influence of different osmolarities on bacterial biofilm formation was studied. Two strains (Enterobacter sp. and Stenotrophomonas sp.) exhibited the most remarkable alterations. Biofilm formation is an important trait and its use has been associated to the protection of organisms against environmental stresses.
