We formulated a latex ink for ink-jet deposition of viable Gram-negative bacterium Gluconobacter oxydans as a model adhesive, thin, highly bio-reactive microstructured microbial coating. Control of G. oxydans latex-based ink viscosity by dilution with water allowed ink-jet piezoelectric droplet deposition of 30 × 30 arrays of two or three droplets/dot microstructures on a polyester substrate. P...

We report progress toward a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID)-based system capable of detecting a few atomic spin-flips. The scaling of the flux sensitivity with SQUID loop dimension of miniature niobium dc SQUID devices is examined and shown experimentally to vary as predicted. Our smallest device, with loop size 3 m 3 m, is capable of detecting 40 spins in a 1-Hz bandwidth. ...

Although squid are among the most versatile swimmers and rely on a unique locomotor system, little is known about the swimming mechanics and behavior of most squid, especially those that swim at low speeds in inshore waters. Shallow-water brief squid Lolliguncula brevis, ranging in size from 1.8 to 8.9 cm in dorsal mantle length (DML), were placed in flumes and videotaped, and the data were ana...

We identified the pelagic habitat hotspots of the neon flying squid (Ommastrephes bartramii) in the central North Pacific from May to July and characterized the spatial patterns of squid aggregations in relation to oceanographic features such as mesoscale oceanic eddies and the Transition Zone Chlorophyll-a Front (TZCF). The data used for the habitat model construction and analyses were squid f...

Background:  One of the medicinal fungi that has been used in traditional medicine for a long time is the Basidiomycete fungus Fomes fomentarius, which is widely distributed in Iran. Polysaccharides as one of the metabolites of this fungus have anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, antibacterial, antioxidant, and anti-cancer properties.  Materials & Methods:   Optimization of independent variable...

We present a hybrid microwave superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) multiplexer that combines two frequency-division multiplexing techniques to allow given number of cryogenic detectors with only fraction frequency encoding resonators. Similar conventional SQUID multiplexing, our relies on inductively coupling non-hysteretic, unshunted rf-SQUIDs resonators as well applying flux ra...

In the present study, properties of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) such as average size, size distribution andmorphology were investigated by Tollens, polysaccharide, modified polysaccharide and microbial methods. The synthesized AgNPs were characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy(SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamics light scatterin...

Ink analysis is central to questioned document examination. We applied direct analysis in real time mass spectrometry (DART MS) to ballpoint, gel, and fluid writing ink analysis. DART MS acquires the mass spectrum of an ink while it is still on a document without altering the appearance of the document. Spectra were acquired from ink on a variety of papers, and the spectrum of the blank paper c...

Scanning superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) microscopy is a magnetic imaging technique combining high-field sensitivity with nanometer-scale spatial resolution. State-of-the-art SQUID-on-tip probes are now playing an important role in mapping correlation phenomena, such as superconductivity and magnetism, which have recently been observed two-dimensional van der Waals materials...

The aim of this study is to investigate the effects organic acid treatments on tenderizing squid muscle. Squid samples removed head, skin, viscera, and tentacles cut into square pieces 4 x4 cm were soaked citric lactic solvents (1 2%) kept in a refrigerator (4°C) for 24 h. It was found that affected physicochemical properties squid. While application decreased pH values water holding capacity, ...
