The metastable ilmenite polymorph of NaNbO(3), instead of the expected perovskite polymorph, may be prepared directly in one step under mild hydrothermal conditions by lowering pH and using close to stoichiometric amounts of metal precursors; in situ energy-dispersive X-ray diffraction shows that crystallisation occurs rapidly via a sequence of intermediate crystalline phases.

The design of a melt synthesis of the first air-stable formulation of the metastable form III of paracetamol is derived from thermo-spectroscopic and thermo-diffraction experiments. Melt crystallisation in the presence of β-1,4-saccharides produces form III selectively and the excipients appear to act as stabilising 'active' templates of the metastable polymorph.

3-Methylcyclohexanone is only partially resolved by crystallisation with a chiral diol host compound (ee 40%), but when recrystallised from an equimolar mixture of the chiral diol host and a similar but achiral host we obtain complete resolution. The latter host acts as a nucleation inhibitor and the enhanced resolution is attributed to kinetic effects.
