The evolutions of practices of seismic slope stability analysis of earth embankment/dam are discussed in this paper. The basic concepts of various methods, salient features, advantages and limitations of each of them are elucidate. Methods for both stability analysis and deformation calculation are presented. Methods for calculation of deformation of post liquefaction stage are also briefed.

The applicability of the dynamic programming method to two-dimensional slope stability analyses is studied. The critical slip surface is defined as the slip surface that yields the minimum value of an optimal function. The only assumption regarding the shape of the critical slip surface is that the surface is an assemblage of linear segments. Stresses acting along the critical slip surface are ...

The problem of absolute stability of Lur'e systems with sector and slope restricted nonlinearities is revisited. Novel time-domain and frequency-domain criteria are established by using the Lyapunov method and the well-known Kalman-Yakubovich-Popov (KYP) lemma. The criteria strengthen some existing results. Simulations are given to illustrate the efficiency of the results.

This paper develops an effective method for a probabilistic analysis of earthen slopes. Typically, the safety of a slope is assessed in terms of a factor of safety based on deterministic methods. However, these methods are unable to handle the uncertainties in the stability analysis. Therefore, the probabilistic approach is used for analyzing the safety of slopes, which is capable to take into ...

The factor of safety for slopes (FS) has been traditionally evaluated using two-dimensional limit equilibrium methods (LEM). However the FS of a slope can also be computed with FLAC by reducing the soil shear strength in stages until the slope fails. This method is called the shear strength reduction technique (SSR). Many authors have pointed out several advantages of SSR over the limit equilib...

Uncertainty is an inevitable factor that influences the function analysis, design, and safe operation in engineering systems. Due to complexity property unclear failure mechanism, uncertainty intrinsic of slope engineering. Hence, stability analysis design cannot meet demands based on traditional deterministic method, which deal with uncertainty. In this study, a practical reliability approach ...
