The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) has recommended against PSA-based screening for prostate cancer due to potential possibilities of false-results. Since no alternative test is available to replace it, we have initiated a trial with the purpose of establishing whether Galectin-3 (Gal-3) serum level and/or the patients' immune response to PSA and Gal-3 antigens could complement the...

We report a case of a patient who presented with an extremely high serum prostate specific antigen (PSA) level and underwent radical prostatectomy for presumed prostate cancer. Surprisingly, the whole mount prostatectomy specimen showed only small volume, organ-confined prostate adenocarcinoma and a large, benign intraprostatic cyst, which was thought to be responsible for the PSA elevation.

PURPOSE A possible association between metformin use and the development of prostate cancer (PCa) has been reported. However, there is limited information on the impact of long-term metformin use on serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels. We investigated the association between exposure to metformin and PSA levels among diabetic patients who were not previously diagnosed with PCa. METHO...

Serum prostate specific antigen (PSA) and prostatic acid-phosphatase (PAP) levels in normal controls, and patients with prostate cancer, benign prostate hypertrophy (BPH) and other urological diseases were examined with a newly developed latex turbidimetric immunoassay (LPIA ACE PSA, LPIA ACE PAP, IATRON LABORATORIES, INC., Tokyo, Japan). The advantageous characteristics of this method are smal...

BACKGROUND The normal prostate-specific antigen (PSA) level in patients with urethral catheterization is a controversy. We designed this study to investigate the effect of nontraumatic urethral catheterization without urinary retention on serum PSA. MATERIALS AND METHODS Seventy patients scheduled for urethral catheterization before elective surgeries were randomly selected and included in th...

This study examined the levels of prostate specific antigen (PSA) in breast tumor tissue of patients who received progestin-containing oral contraceptives (OCs) 1 week prior to surgery. About 20 patients with primary breast cancer were enrolled in the study: 10 were not given any treatment before surgery and served as control subjects and 10 received OCs. Tumor tissue was excised during surge...

BACKGROUND Determinations of serum levels of prostate specific antigen (PSA) are widely used for the detection of prostate cancer, but have not demonstrated sufficient sensitivity and specificity to be useful in urological practice. In order to enhance the diagnostic value of serum PSA, we studied the distribution of serum PSA levels by age in urological patients without clinical evidence of pr...

BACKGROUND Prostate cancer (PCa) is the most common malignancy among men in the United States. Though highly sensitive, the often-used prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test has low specificity which leads to overdiagnosis and overtreatment of PCa. This paper presents results of a retrospective study that indicates that testing for macrophage inhibitory cytokine 1 (MIC-1) concentration along with...
