Evolutionary accounts have difficulty explaining why people cooperate with anonymous strangers they will never meet. Recently models, focusing on emotional processing, have been proposed as a potential explanation, with attention focusing on a dual systems approach based on system 1 (fast, intuitive, automatic, effortless, and emotional) and system 2 (slow, reflective, effortful, proactive and ...

We studied the effect of stimulus quality on the basic physiological response characteristics of oxygenation-sensitive MRI signals. Paradigms comprised a contrast-reversing checkerboard vs. darkness or vs. gray light as well as gray light vs. darkness in a 2 s/52 s protocol (nine subjects). MRI was performed at 2.0 T using single-shot gradient-echo EPI (TR/TE = 500/54 ms, flip angle 30 degrees)...

In this article, we generalize results about binary sequences of length 2p and evaluate the linear complexity and autocorrelation properties of generalized cyclotomic binary sequences of length 2p. We show that in most cases these sequences have high linear complexity and poor autocorrelation performance.

Some authors have suggested separate mechanisms for the processing of temporal intervals above versus below 2-3s. Given that the evidence is mixed, the present experiment was carried out as a critical test of the separate-mechanism hypothesis. Subjects reproduced five standard durations of 1-5s presented in the auditory and visual modalities. The Corsi-block test was used to assess effects of w...

A relativistic framework for computing the nuclear transparency extracted from A(p, 2p) scattering processes is presented. The model accounts for the initialand final-state interactions (IFSI) within the relativistic multiple-scattering Glauber approximation (RMSGA). For the description of color transparency, two existing models are used. The nuclear filtering mechanism is implemented as a poss...

In this paper, I argue that German shows a phenomenon formally akin to an ergative split. While transitive verbs as in (1a) show a NOM/ACC case pattern with the external argument marked nominative and the internal argument marked accusative (cf. 1b), it can be shown that with reflexively marked anticausatives as in (2a) the nominative theme is base-generated in a position c-commanded by the acc...

It has been shown that the Central Nervous System (CNS) integrates visual and inertial information in heading estimation for congruent multisensory stimuli and stimuli with small discrepancies. Multisensory information should, however, only be integrated when the cues are redundant. Here, we investigated how the CNS constructs an estimate of heading for combinations of visual and inertial headi...

Let L be a field containing an algebraically closed field and X an equidimensional quasiprojective scheme over L. We prove that CH i(X, n;Z/`) = 0 when n > 2i ≥ 0 and ` 6= 0; this was known previously when i ≥ dimX and L is itself algebraically closed. This “mod-`” version of the Beilinson-Soulé conjecture implies the equivalence of the rational and integral versions of the conjecture for varie...
