Li et al. (Reports, 30 January, p. 555) reported on a crystal structure for a translocator protein (TSPO) from Rhodobacter sphaeroides in which some of the electron density is modeled as a porphyrin. The analysis of the x-ray data discussed here suggests that this assignment is incorrect.
Photosynthetic electron flow in the bacterium Rhodopseudomonas sphaeroides involves two c-type cytochromes, one membrane-bound and the other a soluble protein, cytochrome c2. Membranes deficient in cytochrome c2 were used for photo-oxidation studies, with and without the addition of purified cytochrome c2. The results favour a series interrelation, membrane cytochrome c-cytochrome c2-reaction c...
The analysis of three pulse echo peak shift (3PEPS) data for LHI of Rhodobacter sphaeroides is discussed in comparison with that of the B820 subunit of Rhodospirillum rubrum. We report also ab initio molecular orbital (CIS/6-3IG*) calculations of electronic couplings for supermolecule subunits of the light harvesting 2 complex (LH2) of Rhodopseudomonas acidophila.
Here, we report the draft genome sequence of Sporomusa sphaeroides strain E (DSM 2875), a strict anaerobic homoacetogenic bacterium. It is able to grow autotrophically on different one-carbon compounds. The strain possesses several genes of the Wood-Ljungdahl pathway. The genome consists of a single chromosome (4.98 Mb).
The DNA sequences of chromosomes I and II of Rhodobacter sphaeroides strain 2.4.1 have been revised, and the annotation of the entire genomic sequence, including both chromosomes and the five plasmids, has been updated. Errors in the originally published sequence have been corrected, and ~11% of the coding regions in the original sequence have been affected by the revised annotation.
Carotenoids protect the photosynthetic apparatus against harmful radicals arising from the presence of both light and oxygen. They also act as accessory pigments for harvesting solar energy, and are required for stable assembly of many light-harvesting complexes. In the phototrophic bacterium Rhodobacter (Rba.) sphaeroides phytoene desaturase (CrtI) catalyses three sequential desaturations of t...
Oxygen caused a reversible inhibition (switch-off) of nitrogenase activity in whole cells of four strains of diazotrophs, the facultative anaerobe Klebsiella pneumoniae and three strains of photosynthetic bacteria (Rhodopseudomonas sphaeroides f. sp. denitrificans and Rhodopseudomonas capsulata strains AD2 and BK5). In K. pneumoniae 50% inhibition of acetylene reduction was attained at an O2 co...
