The cholera toxin subunit and the recombinant cell-surface antigen (molecular mass of 190,000 Da) were administered intranasally to BALB/c mice. After 30 days, the mice were immunized intranasally with the recombinant protein antigen alone. High serum IgG and salivary IgA responses to the protein antigen were induced by the intranasal immunization.

In a case of laevocardia, bronchiectasis, and paranasal sinus abnormalities, assessment on 2 occasions showed the presence of moderate immunodeficiency. Serum concentrations of IgG and IgM were low, and serum and salivary IgA was not detected. T-lymphocytes were reduced in number and cell-mediated immunity in vivo and in vitro was impaired. Opsonisation, complement system, and neutrophil functi...

This study investigated the salivary secretion rates of antimicrobial proteins in response to prolonged, exhaustive exercise in both stimulated (STIM) and unstimulated (UNSTIM) saliva flow sample methods. Twenty-four trained men cycled for 2.5 h at 60% V̇O₂max and then to exhaustion at 75% V̇O₂max. Timed collections of whole saliva were made before exercise, mid-exercise, at the end of the modera...

Bacterial adherence to the acquired dental pellicle, important in dental caries (caries), is mediated by receptor-adhesins such as salivary agglutinin binding to Streptococcus mutans antigen I/II (I/II). Ten selected I/II epitopes were chosen to determine their reactivity to human salivary IgA. Previous studies suggested that a specific HLA biomarker group (HLA-DRB1*04) may have differential in...

Immunoglobulin A (IgA) and IgG antibodies against Streptococcus mutans K1R and 10449 were measured in serum and in stimulated whole saliva from two groups of naval recruits, representing high or low caries susceptibility. The antibody assays were performed by using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and the results were expressed by a method able to estimate the amount of high-avidity and t...

A single bout of resistance exercise (RE) induces hormonal and immune responses, playing an important role in a long-term adaptive process. Whole-body vibration (WBV) has also been shown to affect hormonal responses. Evidence suggests that combining WBV with RE may amplify hormonal and immune responses due to the increased neuromuscular load. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate sal...

The purpose of this study was to measure the amount of adsorption of various salivary proteins to a resin composite having various amounts of surface pre-reacted glass-ionomer (S-PRG) fillers, and to make a comparative study of the adherence of S. mutans to the resin composite covered by various salivary proteins. We experimentally produced resin composites (S-PRG resin) having the basic compos...

Two-hundred and forty individuals were studied, divided into five groups as follows: caries-free children, children with caries, children with rampant caries, young adults with and without caries. Whole stimulated saliva was collected and all individuals were investigated for DMFT/dmft according to the WHO criteria and the simplified oral hygiene index (OHI-S). Quantitative analysis of the tota...

Background: Saliva is one of the most important factor in regulating oral health, with flow rate and composition changing throughout development and during disease. Saliva can affect incidence of dental caries in four general ways, firstly as a mechanical cleansing, secondly by reducing enamel solubility by means of calcium, phosphate and fluoride, thirdly by buffering and neutralizing the acid...
