Ab initio electronic structure calculations on model cations containing a disulfide linkage and a protonated amine site are carried out to examine ow the rate of electron transfer from a Rydberg orbital on the amine site to the S S * orbital depends upon the distance between these two rbitals. These simulations are relevant to both electron-capture and electron-transfer dissociation mass spectr...

We have performed classical trajectory Monte Carlo (CTMC) studies of electron capture and ionization in multiply charged (Q ≤ 8) ion-Rydberg atom collisions at intermediate impact velocities. Impact parallel to the minor and to the major axis, respectively, of the initial Kepler electron ellipse has been investigated. The important role of the initial electron momentum distribution found for si...

A terahertz half-cycle pulse was used to retrieve information stored as quantum phase in an N-state Rydberg atom data register. The register was prepared as a wave packet with one state phase reversed from the others (the "marked bit"). A half-cycle pulse then drove a significant portion of the electron probability into the flipped state via multimode interference.

Absolute high-resolution Se+ photoionization cross-section measurements with Rydberg-series analysis" (2011). Absolute single photoionization cross-section measurements for Se + ions were performed at the Advanced Light Source (ALS) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory using the photo-ion merged-beams technique. Measurements were made at a photon energy resolution of 5.5 meV from 17.75 to 2...

We report the generation of entanglement between two individual 87Rb atoms in hyperfine ground states |F=1,M=1> and |F=2,M=2> which are held in two optical tweezers separated by 4 microm. Our scheme relies on the Rydberg blockade effect which prevents the simultaneous excitation of the two atoms to a Rydberg state. The entangled state is generated in about 200 ns using pulsed two-photon excitat...

Continuum photoabsorption of lithium chloride (LiCl) was investigated using a coupled-channel time-dependent wave packet approach. Photodissociation cross sections for the production of ground-state Li and Cl atoms were computed up to temperatures of 1500 K for a thermal distribution of rotational levels. At such temperatures, LiCl is believed to be the primary Li-bearing gas in cool stellar at...

The energetic thresholds for ion-pair photodissociation of diatomic oxygen fO2 1 hn ! O 1 OsP3y2, P1y2dg were measured using a novel technique. The technique depends on the production and selective detection of highly vibrationally excited ion-pair states which last for at least 5 ms following single photon excitation from the ground electronic state of O2. These ion-pair states are analogous t...

The possibility of electron binding to urea was studied at the coupled cluster level of theory with single, double, and noniterative triple excitations. It was found that none of the urea isomers forms a valence anionic state although almost all of them can attach an excess electron and form a stable dipole-bound or Rydberg anion. Moreover, the canonical tautomers are the lowest energy structur...

We demonstrate excitation of a single trapped cold (40)Ca(+) ion to Rydberg levels by laser radiation in the vacuum ultraviolet at a wavelength of 122 nm. Observed resonances are identified as 3d(2)D(3/2) to 51F, 52F and 3d(2)D(5/2) to 64F. We model the line shape and our results imply a large state-dependent coupling to the trapping potential. Rydberg ions are of great interest for future appl...

The highly debated three-body dissociation of sym-triazine to three HCN products has been investigated by translational spectroscopy and high-level ab initio calculations. Dissociation was induced by charge exchange between the sym-triazine radical cation and cesium. Calculated state energies and electronic couplings suggest that sym-triazine is produced in the 3s Rydberg and pi* <-- n manifold...
