Our aim was to analyze any changes during diastole in patients with normal left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), after pacemaker stimulation from the right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) and right ventricular apex (RVA) lead position. This was a prospective, randomized, follow up study, which lasted for 12 months. Our research included 132 consecutive patients who were implanted with a p...

AIMS Some authors recommend avoiding fusion with left ventricular (LV) intrinsic depolarization during cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT). If fusion is still present during optimized biventricular (Biv) pacing and its long-term effects on the response to CRT are currently unknown. The aim of the study was to analyse the endocardial LV activation pattern induced by echocardiographically opt...

BACKGROUND Acute diarrhea is a global health problem, resulting in high morbidity and mortality in children. It has been suggested that enteric pathogen co-infections play an important role in gastroenteritis, but most research efforts have only focused on a small range of species belonging to a few pathogen groups. This study aimed to assess the impact of co-infections with a broad range of en...

The atrioventricular node (AVN) is the relay station for electrical impulses passing from the atria to the ventricles. The arterial resources of the AVN are functionally relevant and may be interfered by various surgical procedures which deal with the cardiac valves. Our study aim to bring detailed evidences on the arterial supply of the AVN. We dissected and microdissected 50 human adult heart...

In Tunisia in 2008, an unusual G6P[9] rotavirus, RVA/human-wt/TUN/17237/2008/G6P[9], rarely found in humans, was detected in a child. To determine the origin of this strain, we conducted phylogenetic analyses and found a unique genotype constellation resembling rotaviruses belonging to the feline BA222-like genotype constellation. The strain probably resulted from direct cat-to-human transmission.

AIM Long-term right ventricular apical (RVA) pacing may lead to left ventricular (LV) remodelling and heart failure. This study assessed changes in the expression of genes regulating LV contractile function and hypertrophy, after permanent RVA pacing and investigated whether such changes proceed or even predict LV remodelling. METHODS AND RESULTS We enrolled 52 consecutive patients (age 79.1 ...

Background: We report the long-term results of our follow-up study, which compared right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) pacing and right ventricular apex (RVA) pacing in terms of left and right ventricular function, synchrony, cardiac remodeling, the degree of valve regurgitation and clinical outcomes. Methods: Ninety-six patients with completed or high-degree atrio-ventricular block were pro...

BACKGROUND Right ventricular apical (RVA) pacing creates abnormal left ventricular contraction, hypertrophy, and reduced pump function. The adverse effects of ventricular desynchronization may explain the association of RVA pacing with an increased risk of heart failure hospitalization (HFH) in clinical trials. METHODS AND RESULTS Baseline and postimplantation variables were used to predict H...
