This study determined whether there is a logical point of value change, related to either tenderness or consumer acceptance, at which to separate the beef carcass within the rib/chuck region. Rib/chuck rolls (RCR); (n = 30) consisting of the ribeye roll and chuck eye roll subprimals (2nd through 12th rib locations) were cut into 22 steaks each (two steaks per rib location), and Warner-Bratzler ...

Displacements of the rib cage are determined by the intrinsic passive properties of the rib cage, rib cage musculature, pleural and abdominal pressures, and the diaphragm. The diaphragm's mechanical actions on the rib cage are inferred from a force-balance analysis in which the diaphragm is seen to cause expansion of the rib cage by pulling cephalad at its insertions on the lower ribs (insertio...

The orientation of osteons in cortical bone has been shown to correlate with the loading condition. The purpose of this study is to determine the orientation of osteons in the rib cage to better understand the behavior of the rib cage under mechanical load. A total of 37 rib specimens were removed from 21 rib locations from a male and female cadaver. Eight histological slides were created from ...

BACKGROUND Factors determining the shape of the human rib cage are not completely understood. We aimed to quantify the contribution of anthropometric and COPD-related changes to rib cage variability in adult cigarette smokers. METHODS Rib cage diameters and areas (calculated from the inner surface of the rib cage) in 816 smokers with or without COPD, were evaluated at three anatomical levels ...

Isolated fractures of the first rib are extremely rare and are more commonly associated with either multiple rib fractures or life threatening injuries. First rib fractures are commonly caused by direct trauma, violent muscular contraction or by chronic stress. We present a case of isolated first rib fracture in a young healthy patient, where the mechanism of injury appears to be indirect trauma.

Introduction All lateral spinal radiographs in idiopathic scoliosis (IS) show a Double Rib Contour Sign (DRCS) of the thoracic cage, a radiographic expression of the rib hump. The outline of the convex overlies the contour of the concave ribs. The rib index (RI) method was extracted from the DRCS to evaluate rib hump deformity in IS patients. The RI was calculated by the ratio of spine distance...

INTRODUCTION A subungual exostosis (SE) is a bony overgrowth that is permanently attached to the tip of the distal phalanx. Its pathology differs from osteocartilaginous exostoses in that it mainly involves the overgrowth of normal bone, which may present beneath the toenail or on the sides of the toe. This retrospective study aimed to report the results of surgical treatment when the diagnosis...

Osteochondroma, also known as osteocartilaginous exostosis is a benign cartilage forming tumor that usually develops in long bones and relatively uncommon in the craniofacial region. Both the condyle and coronoid tip being the most common sites of occurrence in the mandible, it rarely appears at the symphysis region. Here, we describe a case of osteochondroma arising from the left parasymphysis...

Osteochondromas are the most frequently occurring bone tumors and can rarely lead to vascular complications. A 14-year-old boy with solitary exostosis of the right femur presented with a mass lesion at the posterior aspect of the thigh. Radiological studies demonstrated a popliteal artery pseudoaneurysm. In this case report, radiological findings of this lesion are reviewed.
