A design methodology which generates optimal mechanical repairs for aging aircraft is presented. Finite element modeling and analysis is used to evaluate the repairs. The repair problem is formulated as an optimization problem using an energy criterion. Optimal locations for rivet placement are found for many different situations.

PURPOSE With most all-inside arthroscopic meniscal repair devices, the surgeon has no need for additional incisions or arthroscopic knot tying, and surgical time is decreased compared with traditional suture repair. Although previous studies have examined the pullout strength of various all-inside devices, clinical data is lacking and has been presented for only a few implants. This study evalu...

OBJECTIVE Edge-to-edge repair of the mitral valve (MV) has been described as a viable option used for the surgical management of mitral regurgitation (MR). Based on the significant changes in MV geometry associated with this technique, we hypothesized that edge-to-edge MV repairs are associated with higher intraoperative transmitral pressure gradients (TMPG) compared to conventional methods. ...

Stuttering is a neurodevelopmental disorder associated with left inferior frontal structural anomalies. While children often recover, stuttering may also spontaneously disappear much later after years of dysfluency. These rare cases of unassisted recovery in adulthood provide a model of optimal brain repair outside the classical windows of developmental plasticity. Here we explore what distingu...

In this paper we consider the problem of minimizing the costs of outsourcing warranty repairs when failed items are dynamically routed to one of several service vendors. In our model, the manufacturer incurs a repair cost each time an item needs repair and also incurs a goodwill cost while an item is awaiting and undergoing repair. For a large manufacturer with annual warranty costs in the tens...

This paper presents an algorithm which learns phonological grammars. These phonological grammars— like grammars in Optimality Theory (OT, Prince & Smolensky, 2004) or rule-based grammars (Chomsky & Halle, 1968)—describe phonological maps, or the transformations from input (underlying) forms to output (surface) forms (Tesar, 2014). Like OT grammars, the grammars which underlie the algorithm dist...

Slip studies predominantly focus on either structural or semantic properties of the errors. Since most analyses have been based on pen-and-paper collections, i.e., on-line notes, it is quite understandable that suprasegmental of errors have remained a neglected area. The present prosodic analysis is based on acoustical measurements of 307 self-repairs. Each repair has been measured with the Pra...
