A novel wavelength dispersive soft X-ray emission spectrometer (WD-SXES) has been developed. It covers nominally the X-ray energy range between 50 and 210 eV [1, 2]. One of the characteristic features of the WD-SXES is parallel detection of the signal so that it can be used like a conventional energy dispersive spectrometer. One other feature is a high energy resolution, which is about 0.2 eV. ...

Atomic-layer 2D crystals have unique properties that can be significantly modified through interaction with an underlying support. For epitaxial graphene on SiC(0001), the interface strongly influences the electronic properties of the overlaying graphene. We demonstrate a novel combination of x-ray scattering and spectroscopy for studying the complexities of such a buried interface structure. T...

Using a combinatorial approach, Cr, Al and C have been deposited onto sapphire wafer substrates by High Power Impulse Magnetron Sputtering (HiPIMS) and DC magnetron sputtering. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction were employed to determine the composition and microstructure of the coatings and confirm the presence of the Cr2AlC MAX phase within ...

Ti-A-C-Ag (A is Si, Ge or Sn) nanocomposite coatings have been deposited by dc magnetron sputtering in an ultra high vacuum chamber. Electron microscopy, energydispersive x-ray spectroscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and x-ray diffraction show that all coatings contain nanocrystalline TiC and Ag grains in a matrix of mainly amorphous C. A C/Ti ratio above unity yields a homogenous distr...

Tungsten oxide (WO3) nanorods array prepared using chemical vapor deposition techniques was studied. The influence of oxygen gas concentration on the nanoscale tungsten oxide structure was observed; it was responsible for the stoichiometric and morphology variation from nanoscale particle to nanorods array. Experimental results also indicated that the deposition temperature was highly related t...

Titania, single-doped and lanthanum-silver co-doped titania nanocomposite were coated on cellulosic and polyacrylonitrile fibers via sol–gel method. The prepared samples were evaluated using x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), photolumines...

A new method for the production of boron nanoparticles is described. Boron trichloride is dissociated through injection into thermal plasma followed by a nucleation process producing boron nanoparticles. The ambient oxidation of the as-produced nanoparticles is also investigated. The nanoparticles were characterized with scanning transmission electron microscopy, electron energy loss spectrosco...

Thin films of tin oxide mixed cerium oxide were grown on unheated substrates by physical vapor deposition. The films were annealed in air at 500 °C for two hours, and were characterized using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy and optical spectrophotometry. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy results reveal that the films were highly porous and po...

Long-wavelength lasers have great potential to become a new-generation drive laser for tabletop coherent light sources in the soft X-ray region. Because of the significantly low conversion efficiency from a long-wavelength light field to high-order harmonics, their pulse characterization has been carried out by measuring the carrier-envelope phase and/or spatial dependences of high harmonic spe...

The radiation-induced evolution of the microstructure of Gd2Ti2O7, an important pyrochlore phase in radioactive waste disposal ceramics and a potential solid electrolyte and oxygen gas sensor, has been characterized using transmission electron microscopy and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Following the irradiation of a Gd2Ti2O7 single crystal with 1.5 MeV Xe 1 ions at a fluence of 1.7 310 Xe...
