Probability representation entropy (tomographic entropy) of arbitrary quantum state is introduced. Using the properties of spin tomogram to be standard probability distribution function the tomographic entropy notion is discussed. Relation of the tomographic entropy to Shannon entropy and von Neumann entropy is elucidated.

The quantum corrections to the entropy of charged black holes are calculated. The Reissner-Nordstrem and dilaton black holes are considered. The appearance of logarithmically divergent terms not proportional to the horizon area is demonstrated. It is shown that the complete entropy which is sum of classical BekensteinHawking entropy and the quantum correction is proportional to the area of quan...

The classical Bekenstein entropy of a black hole is argued to arise from configurations of strings with ends which are frozen on the horizon. Quantum corrections to this entropy are probably finite unlike the case in quantum field theory. Finally it is speculated that all black holes are single string states. The level density of strings is of the right order of magnitude to reproduce the Beken...

The aim of this thesis is to formulate and prove quantum extensions of the famous Shannon-McMillan theorem and its stronger version due to Breiman. In ergodic theory the Shannon-McMillan-Breiman theorem is one of the fundamental limit theorems for classical discrete dynamical systems. It can be interpreted as a special case of the individual ergodic theorem. In this work, we consider spin latti...

There has recently been a controversy regarding logarithmic corrections to the area law of the black hole entropy: different approaches give different negative corrections, some with a coefficient 3/2, some with 1/2. It is pointed out here that the standard quantum geometry formalism is consistent with 1/2 but not with 3/2. It has long been argued that the area of the horizon of a black hole ca...

The entanglement entropy of a pure quantum state of a bipartite system is defined as the von Neumann entropy of the reduced density matrix obtained by tracing over one of the two parts. Critical ground states of local Hamiltonians in one dimension have an entanglement entropy that diverges logarithmically in the subsystem size, with a universal coefficient that is is related to the central char...

We study the scaling behavior of the entanglement entropy of two-dimensional conformal quantum critical systems, i.e., systems with scale-invariant wave functions. They include two-dimensional generalized quantum dimer models on bipartite lattices and quantum loop models, as well as the quantum Lifshitz model and related gauge theories. We show that under quite general conditions, the entanglem...

A general inequality between entanglement entropy and a number of topologically ordered states is derived, even without using the properties of the parent Hamiltonian or the formalism of topological quantum field theory. Given a quantum state |ψ], we obtain an upper bound on the number of distinct states that are locally indistinguishable from |ψ]. The upper bound is determined only by the enta...

Remarkable progress of quantum information theory (QIT) allowed to formulate mathematical theorems for conditions that data-transmitting or data-processing occurs with a non-negative entropy gain. However, relation of these results formulated in terms of entropy gain in quantum channels to temporal evolution of real physical systems is not thoroughly understood. Here we build on the mathematica...

In this thesis we examine methods for measuring entanglement entropy in spin-1/2 Heisenberg systems using quantum Monte Carlo in the valence bond basis. We begin by presenting the quantum Monte Carlo techniques used in this research. We then use these techniques to directly compare the recently proposed valence bond entanglement entropy to the standard definition of entanglement entropy: the vo...
