Frequency shifts of the (199)Hg(+) 5d (10)6s (2)S1/2 (F = 0, MF = 0) to 5d (9)6s (2 2)D5/2 (F = 2, MF = 0) electric-quadrupole transition at 282 nm due to external fields are calculated, based on a combination of measured atomic parameters and ab initio calculations. This transition is under investigation as an optical frequency standard. The perturbations calculated are the quadratic Zeeman sh...
A fully automated parallelized implementation of the incremental scheme for coupled-cluster singles-and-doubles (CCSD) energies has been extended to treat molecular (unrelaxed) first-order one-electron properties such as the electric dipole and quadrupole moments. The convergence and accuracy of the incremental approach for the dipole and quadrupole moments have been studied for a variety of ch...
We study the effect of a close encounter of a passing star on the shape of the inner Oort Cloud, using the impulse approximation. The deviation of the perturbed Oort Cloud from sphericity adds angular fluctuations to the brightness of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) due to thermal emission by the comets. An encounter with a solar-mass star at an impact parameter of 2100AU, as expected bas...
As a crucial step towards the completion of fourth post-Newtonian (4PN) gravitational-wave generation from compact binary systems, we obtain expressions so-called "canonical" multipole moments source in terms "source" and "gauge" moments. The canonical describe propagation gravitational waves outside source's near zone, while gauge encode explicit information about matter source. Those two desc...
We discuss the main characteristics of the orbital period modulation in close binaries with late-type components. We focus on the various physical scenarios proposed to explain this phenomenon and, in particular, Hall’s (1989) suggestion that it may be connected with magnetic activity. Starting from the work of Applegate (1992) and Lanza et al. (1998a), we develop an integral approach to evalua...
The boundaries of the E ring can be fit by aligned Keplerian ellipses. Differential precession due to the quadrupole moment of Uranus tends to destroy the apse alignment. We propose that apse alignment is maintained by the self-gravity of the ring. The required ring mass -5 X 1018 g which corresponds to a surface density at quadrature -25 g cm-2•
Static magnetic quadrupole moment of a nucleus, induced by T-and P-odd nucleon-nucleon interaction, is investigated in the single-particle approximation. Models are considered allowing for analytical solution. The problem is also treated numerically in a Woods-Saxon potential with spin-orbit interaction. The stability of results is discussed.
