It is well established that the average blood sugar level of normal and healthy full-term and premature infants is lower than in older children, although the individual variations in, and range of the level during, the neonatal period are considerable (Baens, Lundeen and Cornblath, 1963; Farquhar, 1954; Pedersen, 1952; Smith, 1959; Wolf, 1960; Zetterstrom, 1961, among others). In addition the g...
BACKGROUND While cytochrome P4501A2 is the primary pathway for theophylline (aminophylline ethylenediamine) metabolism in adults, it is developmentally immature in the newborn. OBJECTIVE To report the developmental differences in theophylline toxicokinetics of neonates. DESIGN Case series. Three premature neonates received inadvertent intravenous overdoses of theophylline for apnea of prema...
A case is described of disseminated intravascular coagulation in a premature female infant, with the unusual and predominating feature of myocardial infarction consequent upon coronary vein thrombosis. Some reference is made to the incidence of coagulation disorders in the newborn and to methods of histological diagnosis.
Neonatal liver abscess is a very rare condition associated with high morbidity and mortality rates. There seems to be an increasing trend of this rare condition amongst the newborns admitted to neonatal intensive care units. We report a case of liver abscess in a premature newborn and briefly review the literature and discuss its management.
The feasibility of utilizing maximum length sequence analysis (MLSA) with newborns was examined on 40 premature infants residing in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) were initially obtained using a conventional stimulus rate of 33.3/sec. Using MLSA, responses were also recorded using much faster stimulus rates (227.3/sec, 454.5/sec, and 909.1/sec). As ex...
Antenatal Bartter syndrome is characterized by severe polyhydramnios in mother leading to premature delivery. Antenatal treatment has proven effective to prevent these problems. Postnatally newborns suffer from recurrent episodes of severe dehydration and electrolyte imbalance which can lead to fatal outcome. These manifestations are likely to be overlooked and missed under the umbrella of diag...
The incidence of sepsis, mortality due to sepsis, total mortality, and minor infections was evaluated in a group of 46 premature newborn infants who were treated with intravenous immunoglobulins. They were compared with an untreated control group. No significant differences were observed between the two groups.

Pneumopericardium is an uncommon complication of the neonatal transition period, occurring in 1.3 percent of premature neonates in intensive care settings. Its occurrence is usually associated with some type of barotrauma or respiratory intervention, such as endotracheal intubation or administration of continuous positive airway pressure, and is almost exclusively a problem for the premature in...
Breastfeeding is the natural and safe way of feeding small infants, providing nutritional, immunological, psychological and economic recognized and unquestionable advantages. These qualities are especially important in premature infants, because of their vulnerability. Despite highly desirable, there is, in general, little success in breastfeeding preterm infants, especially in special care neo...
